I don't want to be seen as a techno-optimist, a techno-pessimist, or a techno-realist.I wanna be known as a techno-utilitatian. A techno-humanist.A techno-Unitarian.I want technology to celebrate the inherent worth and dignity of all people; to democratically create justice and equity; to help us all seek truth and meaning; to help us live in harmony with the world we all share.

People talking about free mass transit and, I know nothing about NYC, but what I do know is: - Buying a transit pass most places is like $100/mo - That's money poor people could probably use for other stuff - It's getting harder for poor people to own cars - Driving is still heavily subsidizedIt just seems like making transit free would be a great way to redistribute wealth and increase mobility for people at the bottom of the socioeconomic spectrum, which, from what I understand, is good.

Sure, you *also* want to densify around transit corridors and make transit frequent and reliable, but those things will drive demand regardless of price and can be considered separately....and also, of course, fare enforcement costs more than it saves, but everyone already knew that.

Just a reminder to anyone thinking of following me:I accept all followers who at first glance seem reasonably likely to be an actual person. I probably let a few bots through by being lenient, to be honest. However, an account with no profile and zero public posts is going to be a "no" every time.I realize some people do not post public at all; that's fine. But understand that I have no idea who or what you are and as a result you go in the bit bucket.

One of the great things about Mastodon is if you need a computer to do something: - Seventeen people will just tell you to use Linux - Eleven people will recommend an app that won't run on your hardware - Six people will recommend something you have to build and/or host yourself - Three will recommend a service that costs $20/mo and does none of what you want - ... and one will have built EXACTLY the thing you need, ten years ago, because they had the same problemGods bless this site.

This also reminds me of the time I wrote a blog engine, image library, and RSS aggregator in ASP.NET because all I had was a Windows PC and a domain name. And they all fuckin' worked.I later rewrote the blog engine in PHP, and eventually just switched to running WordPress, before deciding I didn't actually need to host my own blog on my own server, because ain't nobody got time to maintain that shit.

Okay I need help.I was tired. So I went to bed. But I couldn't sleep. So I turned on the bedside lamp and finished the last 200 pages of a graphic novel in a language I can barely speak, figuring that would exhaust me.Now I'm even more awake and nothing is helping.Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh 😭

It doesn't help that my prescription only works for things 4-5 feet away or further (thanks, presbyopia!) but the next step down that most opticians will do is "computer glasses" which only work for things 1-3 feet away, and what I *actually* want is something that works, like 2~8 feet and then is just adequate enough for distance that I can drive in them.I feel like I would either have to lie on an online order form or negotiate with another optometrist to get those though.

@jannem I'm really lazy and want one pair I can use for most stuff (I just take them off for close reading).I know this scheme won't last too much longer as my presbyopia gets worse, but I'll probably go straight to bi/tri-focals after that and just embrace my old-lady-ness.

IT does appear that I can convince my left eye to focus a *little* closer at the expense of, like, some migraines while my brain adjusts. (The longer I wear them the clearer my vision gets.)And the new glasses are actually my prescription and not a copy of a copy of glasses that were correct ten years ago.But I'm still frustrated. And headache-y. Ow. Ow. Ow.

Some helpful advice for all you software devs:- You cannot solve social problems with code- You cannot improve a system until you understand why it works the way it does- You cannot produce tools for someone else without understanding how they work and what they are trying to accomplish

This is an insightful but deeply upsetting article about why everyone in the US feels poor, and why the current political situation emerges as a direct result.TL;DR: the *actual* poverty line in the US for a family of four with two young children is about $140,000, and there isn't much improvement in quality of life between $40K and $100K.https://www.yesigiveafig.com/p/part-1-my-life-is-a-lie

This does suggest Democrats could win with a Mamdani-style platform of Medicare for All and free public transit.(I mean we already knew this, but I'm glad someone is explaining it in a way the CFAs can understand.)

If you're a racist, sexist, homophobe, etc. you are a class traitor.- Bigotry divides the working class against each other and is routinely used as a wedge by the capitalist class- Only the working class really experience the negative effects of being part of a marginalized/minoritized groupThe greatest trick the capitalists ever pulled was convincing us that bigotry was a working-class value.
