@textfiles total aside, but I went searching for MacBiter, curious who it was and if they're still opining on all things Apple, and happened upon this fantastic article of yours on a specific, old issue of Computer Shopper. Wonderful photos therein:http://ascii.textfiles.com/archives/1835

As Jason Scott (I won't tag him, RIP his notifications) and @internetarchive leap to archive #DPreview, this is a timely reminder to donate.Jason once mentioned that the messages you attach to donations appear in their Slack instance, if you want to leave a note of appreciation.https://archive.org/donate/

Well, #Xbox showcase was excellent. Love seeing all these animated looking games. And, of course, I will be living in #Starfield at some point (deliberately not watching the follow on show, to avoid spoilers).

The #lemmy and #kbin approach is quite interesting. I had (incorrectly) assumed it would be something like usenet, where (somehow) a community is created and then everyone mirrors it. So then following gaming wouldn't just be on my instance of kbin, but also gaming on beehaw, etc. I put no thought into how this would be possible, obviously. But what happens if (theoretically) beehaw.org goes away? Individual users can migrate from mastodon and other services, but how do you migrate a community?

"Structural problems don’t have individual solutions. The problem isn’t that you have chosen single-use plastics — it’s that in our world everything for sale is packaged in single-use plastics."A long time ago, perhaps nearly 2 decades at this point, a friend told me recycling was pointless. In retrospect, I'm thinking the industry he worked in gave him insight I didn't (or didn't *want* to?) have. What a depressing but absolutely necessary read from @pluralistic https://doctorow.medium.com/dow-promised-to-turn-sneakers-into-playground-surfaces-then-dumped-them-in-indonesia-ef7e1168a0c1

This sucks. If you have a connected car, anything made recently, and you're remotely interested in #privacy you're going to want to read this.https://www.theregister.com/2023/09/06/mozilla_vehicle_data_privacy/Or keep that older, disconnected car running for as long as you can? It's immeasurably sad that after spending a fortune on a car, you're still somehow the product and being monetized. And, of course, my kids will almost certainly never know anything different. They've been born into connected cars and this privacy nightmare.

@foone I vaguely recall doing this in school in the early 90s. You create the circuit on a transparent sheet, building it out of little black lines, circles for pads etc. Maybe they were stickers? I dunno. Anyway, somehow you put it on the board and shine light through it, them put the board in a vat of corrosive stuff which etched away leaving the desired circuit. Wowsers, I haven't thought of that in decades.

@clive That Paris Review article was fascinating, thanks for sharing. I particularly liked Ray Bradbury's response, especially as he thought to sign it on Guy Fawke's night.

@Cruthachail @vkc What on earth are you doing? This is the exact behavior the thread was calling out in the first place. Do better.

@GossiTheDog I wish this was publicized more. We're a small, slow moving org and don't have this sort of money to piss away while we figure out the efficacy of these things. Still very much on the beginning portion of this rollercoaster.

@futurebird interesting, not sure I've noticed that! A box of iced tea I bought recently explicitly told me to do this to make it: steep tea as normal, and then put in an equal amount of cool water afterwards. I was hesitant, bit it tastes ok

@futurebird haven't read all the posts yet, but this reminded me: Years ago, I used an OSINT online tool to check what information my email returned. I got my full postal address, work history (I'm thinking this came from the LinkedIn breach), etc. I keep meaning to work my way through this compendium of data processors to delete my datahttps://github.com/yaelwrites/Big-Ass-Data-Broker-Opt-Out-List?tab=readme-ov-file
