Two failed attempts to setup Pleroma/Soapbox with a custom account domain (getting account to be @<x>@y.com, instead of @<x>@z.y.com) I hear some account of folks saying they got Mastodon running cheap in the cloud and I have seen better documentation for it on Mastodon proper, so I may be going back.

@paul I'm trying to forward from my base domain to the subdomain. I have a static website at x.com and I have mastodon.x.comI had it working with nginx redirects so that if you searched @<me>@x.com or @<me>@mastodon.x.com my account would show up, but of course I only want the one to show up, and on my instance, mastodon.x.com, my profile showed with the subdomain too.So it worked, but it didn't

@paul I then modified the variable for the host to remove the subdomain but that broke every API call in the front end 😂

@paul I actually started over from scratch with the variable set before starting anything. I may have misunderstood a step maybe but I didn't think it would work when I was doing it.I'm going to start from scratch one more time with mastodon proper and see what happens

If we all have an invested interest in growing the mastodon network, what steps could we collectively take to compete against the big platforms? I love open source and I love the idea of decentralization. I also know and understand it is NOT what the average user wants because it trades efficiency and free service for "freedom"Users don't want to have to worry about pissing off their instance owner but also don't want to pay to host themselves, nor is that even easy to do.This is hard to fix

@paul I think it is in our best interest to ensure we are interacting with all walks of life and not just the technical and security minded folks, or fringes of certain communities. Both for our own experience and selfishly for our own reach. If only "one" type of person uses Mastodon we might as well effectively be shouting into the void. I want to make sure when I share a message it is seen by anyone and everyone.Maybe it's for safety too. Maybe it's to keep "freedom" alive.

@paul @BirdsiteLIVE @joel I was working on and honestly kind of abandoned because I also saw this coming, an open source tweet schedule manager like buffer. A ton of stuff is about to break that makes Twitter cool.

@mikey I understand their value but I kind of hate how they distract from the content. I wish we could separately tag content or have it intelligently pick out keywords.

@freemo I've seen others federate git itself and while that is awesome, it's a bit bigger than the issue I want to tackle. I am looking to connect your existing git repo to an activity pub feed. This would mean connecting GitHub, BitBucket, Gitlab, etc, and being able to follow the repo as an account on Mastodon. Mostly relying on webhooks for automation.
