@avndp Does sudo apt-get update && upgrade not work? It's been a minute since I've used Debian based systems not named Kali, but that should work.

@redstarfish I've used Midori, and I like it. But I'm currently hooked on Qutebrowser...though, I would like to try out BadWolf, if for no other reason than the Dr. Who reference.

@avndp @jbauer That's true. Didn't think about Backports. I've been so used to rolling releases that I forget how long it takes Debian to update their stable packages.

@avndp @jbauer Yep. I completely understand. I have most of the staff where I work running LM because of the stability. I stick with Arch because of the rolling release...and pacman.

From an IT/Network Security perspective, is there any greater benefit from using a Gentoo based platform over Arch?

@redstarfish Yes. I had never heard of BadWolf, but I'm a Whovian...so I gave it a shot. So far, it does what I want. I'm used to Qutebrowser (love, love, love Vim keybindings) so there will be a bit of an unlearning curve...but so far, so good.

@mgrondin I've thought of that. And I agree that it would be a plus to have that control over a system. I'm trying to weigh out if it would be worth the time to compile the kernel for that. Arch is working fine, at the moment, but I wondering if it would be easier to make Gentoo more secure with the USE flags. I have a bit of time to ponder it, though.

@mgrondin That makes sense. I currently use more minimalistic browsers (BadWolf, Qutebrowser) but I'm stuck with LibreOffice until I can find a better (smaller) alternative to run in a terminal. Most of what would be running is more security based applications and IDS's. There would be some remote access and script writing, too. Ideally, it would be a very small system designed for speed and security. Is it easier to harden the Gentoo kernel than it is for Arch?

@mgrondin Thanks! I think I saw a YouTube video on this a few weeks back. I'll have to check it out.

Trying to install CentOS on a donated Gateway dx4885 and it just won't boot. Does anyone have experience with installing Linux on Gateway desktops?

@artilectzed that probably had more to do with the insane amount of sugar found in Mountain Dew instead of the caffeine. Carbohydrates, that are not burned for energy, are stored in fat cells...glycogen stores first (in the muscles) and then in the liver. So your fatty liver was from an overindulgence in sugars instead of your addiction to caffeine.

@selea I did have the secure boot disabled. Ultimately I went with Fedora Workstation. I got CentOS installed, but when I rebooted, the computer couldn't find GRUB. When I went with Fedora, it just worked. I can't figure out why. It may have to do with using Legacy boot instead of UEFI...I dunno.

@redstarfish Some of my favorite books of all time. I've probably read the trilogy (plus The Hobbit) at least 7 or 8 times.

@selea While I, somewhat, understand the sentiment, this verse is not a great example...unless you take it out of context. The preceding verses clearly show the trauma of being captured and exiled from their homeland, and David is saying this about his captors. This is not a verse in a vacuum, nor is this a proclamation from the God of Israel. This is the expression of pain from a tortured captive, crying out for vengeance on his enemies.

@selea I had a client, earlier this week, that had a boot issue with his Windows 7. After three days of troubleshooting, startup repair, restoring to previously working config, and repairing the registry keys (still didn't work), he decided to switch to Linux. After installing Linux Mint, we found out the issue was a upgrade to the drivers on his Nvidia graphics card...won't boot with the correct drivers installed
