@futurebird my theory for why we're in this mess has long been that the leadership and functionaries in the Democratic party prefer fundraising off of the outrageous things Trump and his cronies do than winning elections, because it's simply more profitable for them. The outrageous corruption of the Republicans makes Democrats look normal by contrast, but the motivations are similar. They're rich and like being rich and if losing makes them richer, that's what they've got to do.

When I bought this house, it had three refrigerators (one in the back house). All varying degrees of old, all cheap, but all working. I unplugged all but one, since it's just me and the dogs/cat. The one I was using died today. So, I plugged in the other one in the front house...also now seemingly dead. No sound and not getting cooler. So, now I've got to hope the one in the back house isn't also dead and figure out how to move it to the front. And, quickly, since all my food is thawing.

Past me has one again fucked me over, because the fridge in the back is completely surrounded by junk. I've been using the back house for storage.

lol. The previous owner had one of these monstrosities on the fridge plug for reasons I can't fathom (the house is wired with three-prong grounded outlets everywhere). It was ancient and melted. I removed that adapter (non-trivial, as it was melted/corroded on) and the fridge fired right up. I mean, the compressor started, it didn't ignite.

@futurebird yep, the ground tab was bent away from the outlet...guaranteeing no ground contact. People don't make sense. I used to work as a sound person and DJ and I can't count the number of times I was handed an extension cord with the ground pin ripped out, "to prevent hum". (I always used my own grounded extension cords, and if I needed a ground lift for hum, I had that capability in my DI).

@ricci I hate to say it, but the last Nirvana record was 32 years ago, and the one everyone knows is 34 years ago. There are now a bunch of grandpas that listened to Nirvana in high school. Dad rock is shifting to, like, The Killers, I guess? Or maybe even later bands.

@SnoopJ @ricci my biggest computer-related pet peeve for years was the passive aggressive stub manpages in GNU projects that just said, "for documentation use info". I don't know if GNU stopped being assholes or if distros fix it during packaging, but I haven't seen that stub in years. Still mad about it, though.

I think the existence of Docker is a net-negative for opsec and devops (and not in ways a better implementation like podman can fix, though podman is a better implementation).I keep finding containers hiding ancient buggy dependencies baked in. It's so easy for brokenness to hide in containers, they're just black boxes people pile up until things kinda sorta work. Everyone is afraid to touch the containerized stuff because they have no idea how it works or how the pieces fit together.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills. Every recent text editor sets up tab as the auto-complete key, by default, and that is simply deranged behavior. And, pretty much all the Neovim plugin starter bundles also do it that way.How the fuck are you supposed to tab? Guessed completions are wrong 90% of the time, why would I ever want it to be the thing that always happens when I hit "tab"? I've never hated a default key binding more than this one.

Am I simply an alien who uses the computer completely differently than everyone else? I genuinely can't figure out how people use an editor configured this way. How do you not have muscle memory for "tab=indent" if you've used a text editor at all for any reason ever?

@ricci I bought my first Aeron chair from the Arthur Andersen bankruptcy auction. I thought about bidding on a big shredder, too, but my dad said, "Those shredders are worn out, son."But, I did not know about the Enron Corpus.

@futurebird I think a lot of folks like talking to the LLMs because they're programmed to gaslight you into thinking you're a genius.

At first, I thought, "OK, this song really sucks, but at least they tried." But, no. They didn't try.I will accept shitty music made by humans, I might even find it charming. I will not accept shitty music made by mixing 300,000 copyright violations in a blender.
