Well, I got an #AlpineLinux box working on my old laptop with an #Openbox desktop running #tint2 as its taskbar, #Xfce terminal, and #Falkon as its web browser. It can confidently run #SuperTuxKart and #Minetest and I'm working on seeing if I can get #Minecraft running. It's still more than a little clunky and held together with duct tape, but I love this thing. This is probably how my little brother feels when he's tinkering with his truck.

@sirberIt's a Dell Latitude D630 with 4 GB of RAM, an Intel Core2 Duo T7300 CPU (stock as far as I know) and an NVIDIA Quatro NVS graphics card. Not bad for 2003, but it pretty much needs Linux in order to be fast enough to run certain games.

@yogthos"The capitalist class" means "humanity as a whole." Capitalist theory is just a formalization of the way humans naturally behave in groups. That's why every other economic theory is framed as a replacement for it.

@mindbatThe socialist making a perfect case for how capitalism is perfectly viable without any need for central banks or regulation because of the way humans behave in normal transactions XD

@djlinkThis happened to pinball. Getting a million points used to be a big damn deal. One of my favorite tables from thu 80s couldn't even display scores thaw high. Now you hardly get into the high scores unless you've scored at least that much. Not to mention it's a lot easier to get multiballs, which makes it that much easier to score ridiculous points, especially with multipliers.

@turbohermit @djlinkHow many alternatives do you think exist in countries that don't have capitalism? I'm trying to remember what happened the last time someone tried to compete with Tencent but I'm drawing a blank on any such companies that are permitted to exist.

@djlinkI'm a little bewildered how many companies still use Facebook. The last time election season rolled around in my area I literally couldn't do research on some of the candidates because they had Facebook pages instead of websites and I couldn't see them without registering an account. I don't know if I'm just out of touch or what but I feel like there's no way that's a sustainable strategy.

@LeoSandboxFinal Fantasy XIV has the most satisfying and beautiful story I've ever played in a video game. I still have some classics in my to-do list, though; we'll see if Planescape: Torment holds up to the competition.

@djlinkWould have been a good idea to add licenses to the list, too, so people can see at a glance which ones have compatible licenses with your project and which ones are going to spring a copyleft trap on you.

@djlinkThe problem with building your own game code from the ground up is you risk getting bogged down in low-level system code and never get around to actually making a game. It's killed a few of my projects for sure.

@seleaReferring to machine learning algorithms by the generic term "AI" has caused a lot of misapprehensions about what it is and what it's capable of.I saw a lot of not-stupid people early on during the hype train ride talking about how we're only a short amount of time away from the digital Aristotle of which we've always dreamed, and a lot of people even today still treat "AI-generated" solutions like they're superior to what a human can do.While it is accurate to say that machine learning can learn how to do things that humans fail at, this doesn't imply an underlying intelligence.I'm still not satisfied that we've yet solved the problem of machine learning algorithms having no concept of the truth value of generated statements, and that's a major hurdle to get over before I can treat ML as reliable in good conscience. So far all it seems to be good at is giving artists and people in creative fields existential dread about being rendered obsolete or having their intellectual property taken away.

@BrodieOnLinuxA lot of developers don't want to turn their software into nagware, because they're aware that people get very irritated by that and might replace or patch software to remove the nagging. Unfortunately, in the age of the Internet, it is often the case that if you don't nag you don't get. See also YouTubers who remind you to like and subscribe in every video.

@seleaI always wonder to what degree the difference in top-level domain costs and fees is caused by different costs incurred by whatever provider administers them and to what degree it's just speculation about the perceived value of a specific TLD.For instance there's a couple of dollars' difference between .com, .org, and .net which seems to be mostly arbitrary, but .pro domains are quite expensive and it's pretty clear this is down to the perception that only people who make life-changing amounts of money would need them.It makes sense for .host to be a little pricey if you're expecting it to only be used by businesses, but I have to wonder how many hosting companies would see that and just go ".com is cheaper, we'll use that instead."

@seleaDamn. Well, that's unfortunate. Maybe the provider will lower the price if the market doesn't turn out the way they expect.
