MetaFilter is great because theologians get pedantic in discussions of Doctor Who episodeshttp://fanfare.metafilter.com/12750/Doctor-Who-The-Witchfinders

@orbifx Yep, we should individually have the right to stay in our homes, not own, sell, and profit from them.

@sciss it used to let you put money in a bunch of different ways, and held it while you made real micropayments until it ran out. But I think that put them into a regulatory position they didn't want to be in and so they had to switch to something else - which doesn't quite work.

@sciss I found that Liberapay isn't really useful for micropayments anymore and I haven't found anything to replace it. OpenCollective looks like a Patreon replacement, but not a micropayments service. But maybe a good way to support the particular projects you're interested in?

I wish I was rich enough to buy physical copies of many of the (academic) journals I like to read.Actually I wish journals sold physical copies for reasonable prices. Best of all would be if my library still actually had physical copies of the journals I want to read.

@Canageek I actually spent $70 getting stuff I need to reference a lot printed and bound at staples last week. And I do print a lot of papers :/ But for stuff like this, where I want to skim it and maybe dive into a few articles, I wish I could just drop by the library and see a physical copy.

I am really enjoying libro.fm for audiobooks. https://libro.fm/They're a DRM-free audiobook store that donates a portion of what you spend to a local bookshop of your choice. They have their own app, but I like to listen with the bookmobile app. I like how easy it is to move books from my computer to my phone with this bookmobile!#books #audiobooks #recommendation

@orbifx ah yes, the wonderful freedom of choice capitalism gives us! Would you like to die by poison or starvation?

You can influence politics and make our lives better by calling politicians. This can be hard if you don't like talking on the phone, but here are a few things that make it easier.1) write down what you're going to say in advance2) use a website like https://5calls.org/ to get example scripts and ideas of what to call about3) call on weekends or at night when no one is there and leave a message

Our gas furnace is end of life and we’re trying to replace it with a heat pump. Remarkably difficult. Most companies won’t call us back. Of the ones that have, they all, except for one, pushed gas furnaces hard, flat out lied about heat pump capabilities (or didn’t know?) and made it clear they aren’t actually capable of a good install. The one company that seemed happy to do a heat pump quoted us $23,000 which is preposterous.WTF why is this so hard

@msh air source, and it’s rare that it gets below freezing here. I really think they made a mistake - maybe they thought we wanted ground source?

@msh yeah, I’d love a ground source heat pump, but the price tag is way too much :( I don’t know what’s up with this company - on the off chance it’s a misunderstanding, we’ve asked the company for justification

@thor I love paper periodicals and subscribe to several! And I’m a millennial. But who knows how long they’ll hang on - already several things I’d like to subscribe to are online only

@thor I get frustrated with textiles - clothes, curtains, bedding - the more plastic, the cheaper! And the non plastic premium is 💰

Over on twitter I used to follow a bunch of #BC and #Washington #meteorologists to get good discussions of weather patterns, long term forecasts, dangerous #weather, and other local #meteorology. Any recommendations here on fedi?
