@essjax @Powareverb @strypey I lived in Japan and that is the penultimate of small spaces. The washing machine was in the bathroom (literally the bath, not the toilet as those are separate but tiny spaces) or it was out on the minuscule veranda as that is where you hang your clothes to dry.

@rogerparkinson @strypey and chlorinating public water supplies is also for “medical reasons”. Cholera and other water borne diseases are the alternative I guess. We are on tank water and our dentist constantly reminds us to ensure we use fluoride toothpaste. I had flouride treatments as a kid (mouthpiece full of goop) and very likely because of that I have quite good teeth without any significant cavities all these years.

@strypey Russian invasion of Ukraine (this latest time, not Crimea) will be considered the first step. And as you note Gaza and Syria, along with China tightening the noose on Taiwan, the election of Trump and his move to US isolationism (unless he gets some $$$ personally I’m sure) are all part of the history that will be written in retrospect

When I struggle to understand why some people are so worked up about things like gay marriage I only need to stop and think that until one year before I was born my marriage, to my Chinese/Taiwanese wife, would have been illegal in 15 states of the US. Same people; same hate. Same assholes.

@strypey uniforms are damn pricey and only single source. Someone is making some coin on this. That said, my kids do say it is far easier to just wear a uniform than think about what regular clothes to wear every day. But, the claim that uniforms are a leveler such that less well off kids aren’t ridiculed for their clothes compared to peers is BS - everyone at school knows who is wearing second hand, well aged uniforms.

@dragonfrog @strypey at all my kids’ schools here in NZ it is all a logo shirt/blouse that is only available from one predetermined shop. Slacks and skorts we’ve been able to buy elsewhere now in college/high school. Before they also had to purchase logo’d shorts. And in Primary also a logo’d sun hat.

Just finished reading “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”. Working my way through le Carré novels in order. This is the best so far. So well written and enough twists and turns to ensure a surprise if you don’t know the story - which I did not. Loved it!#books #JohnLeCarre

@strypey most meat and vegetables we buy from the Chinese grocery stores in Albany. Bit of a trek but the quality and variety is better. Just went to Bin Inn today to get some spices. Milk in glass bottles via the local butcher. Some stuff need to get from the duopoly but try to use them as seldom as possible. Amazes me these 20 years living here how few options there actually are to buy NZ grown produce other than through the duopoly.
