@penguin42 @helenczerski Or you could just increase the country's national reserves.I don't have a hatred of gas companies. But I don't see a reason to grant them an opportunity to make bigger profits at everyone else's expense. There is no good reason to grant these licences - they harm the environment whilst providing no public good that could not otherwise be achieved.

@roobre One of my friends writes professional CAD stuff and complains about graphics driver writers. Apparently once your software becomes moderately popular the GPU vendors start "optimising" the drivers to make it faster. Where "optimising" means disabling various features that they don't think your customers will notice are missing.

@mjg59 doesn't this mean it won't cope with *any* F38 RPMs since they will all have a similar signature block?

@mjg59 Much to my wife's annoyance, I end up doing a lot of DIY instead of getting a contractor in, because every single time I've got a contractor in to do stuff they have failed to follow instructions and the result has been not what we asked for. In the end it's just less stressful to do it myself instead of spending lots to argue with someone who's being paid to meet our requirements and are failing to do so. :(

@mjg59 My memory of 9/11 was fielding support calls along the lines of "the BBC news site is slow, please fix my internet connection"... I can't imagine why a news site might've been a bit sluggish!

@mjg59 most people don't need anywhere near the bandwidth they have these days. I often have conversations with customers:-I'm upgrading to gigabit, will $hardware cope?-You never go above 10Mbps.-But we want to upgrade because ISP is offering it for not much extra money.-<sigh> Yes, $hardware will cope because you'll still never exceed 10Mbps...I don't get the desire to pay to replace a 10x more than you need connection for a 100x one, no matter how good a deal the ISP offers.

@ParadeGrotesque I think I disagree with this...- government can finance whatever short term project they want. Don't think you can just spend indefinitely. But there's certainly a few one-off projects that they could fund to make a big impact on climate change.- the people doing the "important jobs" are still getting the shaft, and the grifters are still getting rich, so I guess no one cares?

Spent some time in court today arguing that the #ICO is wrong... and the judge agreed!Although it wasn't a complete success, it wasn't an unmitigated disaster and I'm actually quite pleased that a court agreed that the ICO's interpretation of the UK #GDPR is bonkers.https://blog.nexusuk.org/2024/03/another-day-in-court-arguing-against-ico.html#Privacy #Spam

FFS... My #Zigbee antenna was dangling between the data cabinet and some racking (i.e. around loads of metal). So I "tidied" it into the loft space above the data cabinet... ...and the link quality has gone down.(But it seems to be working... Not sure how to interpret LQI - it was 66, now 53 and some Googling suggests anything under 100 is shit. The device and coordinator aren't far apart so no particular reason to think that it *should* be shit)

Not had the usual 1st of the month direct debit notification from @aaisp today. Not a big deal, just thought I'd give the heads up in case there's a problem!

Gah, judges are so obtuse sometimes. A (quite large) small claim filed through moneyclaim.gov.uk. I got a letter saying it had been transferred to the county #court, but they say this never happened and it appears to be "stuck" in the online processing centre. They advised me to file duplicate paperwork directly with the court, which I did and got a blunt "the claim will be struck out unless the claimant sends compliant paperwork" order - no explanation as to WTF judge thought was not compliant!

I need a replacement remote control for my #Philips #AndroidTV because the buttons on the old one has died. 2 shops selling replacements: one shop has decided to add high contrast branding to the front of the remote, the other shop has not. I'm buying the not-branded one even though its more expensive and I wonder if the shop knows that by branding their name all over stuff, they are reducing the product's value...

@benjojo Tiny bit disappointed that we have still got 5GW of gas spinning, given NGESO's recent comments about expecting to run without any gas some time this year.

@Gargron There's also no reasonable case for an OS developer or app developer to have a say over whether I can have root access to my own device. Yet there are a whole shit-load of things I can't do on my phone because it is rooted.
