@futurebird yeah, it's weird how he expresses admiration for *these* losers.

@futurebird modern non-alcoholic beers are pretty good, too (especially the hoppy or fruity ones). Between the increased awareness of the negative health effects of alcohol and improved methods for removing alcohol from beverages (the old method was to heat alcoholic beer to boil the alcohol off, but now they use a vacuum, which doesn't negatively impact the flavour), alcohol free beverages are definitely poised to become more popular overall.

@futurebird I left Twitter when Musk took over, but I only actually deleted my account the other day. I'm currently treating my Facebook account the way I treated my Twitter account for the last few years (I'm checking a little, but not contributing other than to tell people to come here). The election wasn't even the last straw for FB, but their terrible moderation (or lack thereof) finally got to me.

@Crow @futurebird I don't watch her (I don't watch non-comedy versions of news, I read it), but I've seen similar advice shared elsewhere. I think the idea with book clubs is to build a network of local people who can help plan how to resist fascism and also to avoid feeling like the only one who wants to resist it.

@futurebird @Crow I agree, but also right now, they haven't *done* anything and aren't in power yet. So protesting against Trump in the streets is premature. I think that's why a lot of the advice people are giving right now is to prepare, including by building networks.

@JessTheUnstill the US should get rid of the penny and replace the dollar bill with a coin.

@futurebird I was talking to a liberal last year about the issue of immigration at the border with Mexico and pointed out that the USA has obligations under the Declaration of Human Rights to process all the asylum applications (so the solution is simple: hire a bunch of lawyers and judges to process applications), but I was told that this isn't possible. Like, no. If the US cares about human rights, processing all asylum applications is the minimum it can do.

@futurebird the nose makes me think of an anteater a bit, but I think those are only in the Americas.

@futurebird I dated a guy whose mom was like that. She wouldn't open things she bought because she wasn't supposed to be buying them so she would hide the boxes in the basement. She'd also always answer the house phone because she was getting calls from collection agencies about the secret credit cards she wasn't supposed to have and everything.

@selzero I'm guessing that Cuba has paracetamol (which is another name for acetaminophen). It's not like the name brand version is the only kind of that drug, just because it's the only one Trump can pronounce.

@futurebird our usage varies over the year, but in September, we used 315 kWh (our highest use was April, with 631 kWh). We have a heat pump for our air conditioning and minor heating and then gas for the serious winter heating. We also roughly follow the '70s era Department of Energy suggestion to keep temperatures between 68 °F to 78 °F (20 °C to 25.5 °C), allowing our house to be hotter in the summer and colder in the winter.

@Nonilex oh wow. I heard they were going to stop making pennies, but I assumed they were going to make rules about how to deal with rounding *first*.

@Archivist has hydro actually caused the most deaths? It looks like coal is worse from what I've seen (e.g. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/death-rates-from-energy-production-per-twh). @benroyce @Npars01 @randahl @PierreM

@benroyce it looks like the "most deadly" title for hydroelectricity is based on a dam failure in China in the '70s, but doesn't include all the deaths and disabilities causes by burning coal (possibly just the coal-related accidents). @Archivist @Npars01 @randahl @PierreM

@Archivist fair enough. I'm also not suggesting that hydro is the ultimate answer or suitable in all situations. I grew up in southern Ontario, which has some massive waterfalls that make it ideal for hydroelectric power (there's not a dam, they just redirect some of the water from the Niagra River into some turbines instead of letting it fall naturally), but obviously there are other locations where it's a less suitable option.@benroyce @Npars01 @randahl @PierreM

@futurebird I'm mostly using my Google accounts for spam and because I need them for my phone. And I use YouTube, but I block the ads and don't save my history. I haven't used Google to search for years though.
