@marcan @ariadne This could explain why I had to replace the speakers in my Thinkpad T440p every 1-2 years because the left speaker would literally destroy itself…

@mjg59 Talking of threat models and Signal, what do you think of this commit in version 6.34.1 of their Desktop client?https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Desktop/commit/9bda0766d361d8850e153f188a6aa6bc01e4f2c0

@tante That's what you get (along with a bunch of other undesirable effects like corruption, party politics, lacking representation of lower income classes, etc) when you have a system where political representatives get elected (which incurs a huge incentive to be "present in the media" at *all* costs) instead of simply using a random sample of the population.

@sj "less than 2x" in what regard/metric? Financial value of the goods produced? Physical mass? Physical volume? Number of employed persons? Population? The way I see it, China has about double the annual emissions of the US, but over four times the population, so the average Chinese emits only about half as much as the average North American. And even this is still a very generous perspective towards the US, since it ignores historically accumulated emissions.

@debian This is not limited to the 6.1.64 kernel. Vanilla kernels 6.6.3 and 6.6.4 from kernel.org (which were released around the same time/release cycle as 6.1.64 and 6.1.65) were also severely broken.

@jpfox @debian I wasn't specifically referring to this ext4 bug, but rather to a bunch of other bugs in 6.6.3 and 6.6.4 that caused crashes and unbootable systems for me. I know that those bugs have been fixed because I've been running 6.6.5 for 2~3 days now on my machines and haven't had a single one of the issues I had encountered with 6.6.3 and 6.6.4.

@foone So a malicious IDE drive would theoretically be able to perform DMA attacks against the host system? 🤯

@dexter @ariadne Meanwhile in RISCV land: https://ghostwriteattack.com> The GhostWrite vulnerability affects the T-Head XuanTie C910 and C920 RISC-V CPUs. This vulnerability allows unprivileged attackers, even those with limited access, to read and write any part of the computer’s memory and to control peripheral devices like network cards. GhostWrite renders the CPU’s security features ineffective and cannot be fixed without disabling around half of the CPU’s functionality.

TIL: OSM mapping and apparently even operating/using any sort of GPS device is illegal in mainland China… 🤯https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restrictions_on_geographic_data_in_Chinahttps://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Chinese_tagging_guidelines#Legalityhttps://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/China#Legality> According to the Surveying and Mapping Law of the People's Republic of China, private surveying and mapping activities without authorization[a] are illegal in mainland China. "Since at least 2007, it has been effectively illegal for foreigners to operate a GPS device in China."

@dalias What's the difference to the same scammers just sending people an email? Most people use the same email address for everything, so it's trivial to find out what email address to send the scam to.

@khm @dalias If people fall for these DM scams, what are the chances of those very same people noticing that the scam email must be a scam/phishing attempt because they never actually entered their email address when they created their Mastodon account several years ago?The majority of people are not as tech savvy as you might hope, and doesn't even distinguish between the activitypub protocol and implementations of that protocol, let alone different instances/servers of an implementation.

@foone "PM" probably means "phase modulation" in this context.
