@simonYes my only hope is that (Sainsbury's) has chosen not to enable the camera, but I really wouldn't be surprised what with the stories of other supermarkets using facial recognition without customers knowing. It's also terrible that so many of the self-service checkout monitors have cameras facing users now.

@yarmoNice site. Looks promising, but it's a turn-off that I have to temporarily allow 3-4 different scripts (apparently all) and I still can't open the hamburger menu or FAQ dropdowns.

@yarmo I use NoScript for all browsing by default, which blocks almost any scripts from loading. I generally temporarily allow those I feel are OK and which I need for particular sessions. But that didn't work when visiting this site. It's probably some other privacy-enhancing setting I have set in Firefox. Still, the moral of the story is it's sad that so many sites now rely on all sorts of these (potentially malicious) scripts running.

@redstarfishI enjoyed this guide a while ago. I also love the idea of using PGP as it was used (and relied upon) back in the day. I use Thunderbird with the Enigmail add-on and have a key pair etc, but I've found issues using it due to having ProtonMail's Bridge installed. It kind of interferes with Enigmail. What's your setup like?

@redstarfishAh good idea. I didn't think of doing that but yes I have done manual encryption through terminal before, so that would be a good solution.

@mikeA free pass indeed: making out that #Google only track people to the ends of the earth because it's the only way they can give people nice free apps. The opposite is true. Those apps only exist to track people, and they still have the gall to claim they care about users' #privacy.

TIL that toots with too many characters fail to post and then don't even save to drafts. ๐คจ At least I think that's what happened. The toast notification disappeared before I had time to read it properly. Is that a Mastodon thing or just @fedilab ? #Mastodon @Gargron

@fatboyI think Tor functionality has a part to play, but personally I prefer to stick with Firefox ESR and Tor Browser.

My website now has a .onion location. As it's a minimal static site with only HTML and CSS, you shouldn't notice any difference in functionality or appearance... http://http://q3sb5gvp2euciq3jhf5q6rvhndw7tlgg6lr6tcp5femmrb3ivry3qmyd.onion -- Thanks to @micahflee #Tor #onionshare #privacy #anonymity #website

@FreePietjeYep, chances are that if you see a load of gibberish which is a link, it's probably a .onion.

Anyone using #Session messenger? Sounds great, but I've only recently managed to persuade family and friends to use #Signal. This is what's called 'a good problem to have' - we're now spoilt for choice of messaging apps which protect our #privacy.

@blacklight447I agree. It's promising but for now I'm sticking with the tried and tested Signal. I'm surprised to hear Signal apparently serves from AWS servers (according to Loki CTO), and I still wonder why they insist on phone numbers.

@blacklight447Yeah, trust they have their valid reasons. I love what Moxie has done for secure messaging, just a shame you don't hear from him much anymore. I'm surprised he's not on Mastodon...
