@BrodieOnLinux My reason for supporting a total block isn't "just because it's Meta"; Federating with Meta would genuinely risk the privacy of the network's users. I have zero confidence that Meta would respect the privacy of users on other instances - it would all just become another personal data mine for them. Also, I doubt an instance of that size could ever be moderated effectively by Fedi's standards.

@BrodieOnLinux That's the same argument that Clearview AI use to justify their invasive technology. Also, if Meta wanted that data without being on the network, they'd have to scrape and aggregate it, which takes time, effort, and violates instance ToS, and probably a host of different data privacy laws. As an instance on the network, Meta would automatically ingest all network activity; no effort required, legally not a problem.

@BrodieOnLinux Aside from that, a Meta-owned instance would immediately be flooded with brands and advertisers, who don't understand the difference in culture between a Big Tech platform like Instagram and a community-run network like the Fediverse.

@BrodieOnLinux I agree that, technically they could collect your public data. However, as soon as Meta joins the Fediverse, that data collection isn't just a speculative possibility, it is guaranteed to happen. The fact that Fedi data is public doesn't mean that we shouldn't try to prevent its unconsented collection and use by Meta. You're right that genuine privacy on a public network is an impossibility: I suppose when I say privacy, I more mean "the right not to be surveilled". This is a right that the Fediverse grants, but Big Tech platforms don't. Meta's presence on the Fediverse would definitely threaten that right.
