@101101000 Regarding account migration, see https://docs.modernxmpp.org/projects/portability/There's always more that can be done, but a lot of progress was made in this area last year thanks to NGI funding.@Mirk0dex @koherecoWatchdog @rs1linuxtools

@kyva If it's your first time with XMPP, do check out Snikket which is an all-inclusive "XMPP distribution" (including server and apps for Android/iOS). The server component is based on Prosody, but in Snikket it is already configured for a bunch of additional features and a web interface for management. We recommend Snikket if you want an "out of the box" setup, or Prosody if you're looking for more customization or digging deeper into XMPP.Good luck on your self-hosting journey!@quinn64

@kaipThe Snikket apps require an invitation to an instance to create an account, or an existing account. You (intentionally) can't use them to register on random public XMPP servers. If you don't know someone with an existing Snikket instance, we recommend setting up your own (self-hosted or hosted by us).@NatCor @eversten

@ru @wholesomedonut :wave:Development continues daily, but there are so many parts of Snikket and not enough resources to continuously tend to them all at the same time 🙄Current focus is on new account security features, mostly upstream in Prosody: https://blog.prosody.im/modern-xmpp-auth/This is being funded by an NGI/NLnet grant. It's great stuff for sure, though it's all server-side work right now which is less visible. More work on the apps will return soon! 🙂

This is what we're here for:Nearly a week ago, someone armed with a Raspberry Pi and entirely new to self-hosting asked: "what is a DNS record and how do I make one?" in our community chat.Fast-forward to today: they're successfully self-hosting Snikket, and very happy! ❤️

@vesperto Probably, eventually (but "non-docker" is not very specific).A full answer wouldn't fit in a toot, but can be found here: https://snikket.org/faq/#q-can-i-set-up-snikket-without-dockerHope this is useful 🙂

@sikkdays Whether Snikket is a good replacement for Signal depends on your use case for it. Snikket accounts aren't linked to phone numbers, which has advantages for some (privacy) and disadvantages for others (discoverability). Our primary focus is on easy onboarding of small groups of users - particularly families, clubs and other social organizations. But this isn't the only way people use it - single-user instances are pretty common, when people just want a simple way to self-host XMPP.

@esmail Yes, very much still alive! We're aiming for a "Snikket 2023" release a little later in the year.Managing our very limited resources is tricky, and a large chunk of time in the past year has been spent on foundational stuff on the server side and upstream projects, which you can read about at https://docs.modernxmpp.org/projects/auth/This funded work is a mixed blessing - it's great to be paid for improving open-source, but it has a narrow focus and isn't always the most visible work we could be doing.

@esmail We're working on a new funding arrangement for 2023, after this current grant-funded work is completed. The plan is to get back to working on more user-facing stuff (including the apps) starting in around April/May.

Apple has declared the 2013 MacBook used for Snikket iOS development to be too old to run the latest dev tools 🙄This means we're temporarily unable to push iOS app updates, but we're working on getting a replacement. If anyone has a spare MacBook lying around that they could donate (ideally M1, to test running the app natively), send a DM our way!Alternatively, just 50 new Liberapay donors at €0.25/wk would help cover the cost of purchasing a used one locally ❤️https://snikket.org/donate

@neil You don't need to do anything - everything Snikket needs to chug along happily is alread set up for you inside the container (this is why we use docker: https://snikket.org/faq/#q-can-i-set-up-snikket-without-docker ).If anything does go wrong, we have a helpful community support chat: https://snikket.org/contact/And if you're the kind of person that simply needs to use OS packages and set up cron jobs, our sister project @prosodyim has you covered 🙂@tony

@tony Docker can indeed be annoying when it comes to networking! Snikket doesn't use any of Docker's network stack and uses "host" networking the same way normal packages would (so your usual firewall will still apply, IPv6 still works, and performance isn't degraded). In the future we're looking at official podman support which has a number of benefits over docker.@neil

Our :snikket: blog has been quiet for a while, so we just kicked off a series of blog posts reviewing the current state of the Snikket project - where we're at, and where we're heading:https://snikket.org/blog/state-of-snikket-2023-intro/Hopefully these and future posts will cover a lot of questions you may have. If you have any other topics you'd like to see us cover, let us know! 🙂(+ big thanks to @strypey for putting the effort into this initiative ❤️)

Our latest blog post dives into the funding of the Snikket project. Funding open-source is rarely easy. Grants, donations, sponsorships - we've tried them all 🙂https://snikket.org/blog/snikket-2023-funding/#xmpp #snikket #opensource #funding

We've published a new blog post about the recent jabber.ru security incident (a kind of attack we have not seen before). It did not affect Snikket servers, but we are taking steps to remove the possibility of such attacks in the future. This includes advice that self-hosters can follow.https://snikket.org/blog/on-the-jabber-ru-mitm/
