I think I'm going to terminate #OpenCollective, I had assumed this is a venture aimed towards helping free software projects, so i never really looked into their cost/fee structure, which comes out to fairly obscene 12-25% of each donation. That's far worse than paypal. The notion that some 25% of a donation is going to them instead of the project is not what I had in mind.I'll be shutting OC down as soon as I can get the funds transferred out.I'll look into patreon/paypal recurring instead.

@josemanuel @Liberapay thanks, in fact, a guy on my IRC just noted that too. I'm getting my donations out of #OpenCollective because they are a serious ripoff, and I have to apologize to everyone who donated through them since 15-25% of those funds went to OC, not #inxi as intended.I will go with the choice of the fediverse, thanks.I was fooled by the 'open' in opencollective, and didn't investigate them first. Plus I guy recommended them, but I think he was also fooled by the 'open'.

@josemanuel @Liberapay Huge thumbs up to @Liberapay - their website was very well executed, the only major weakness is lack of links to @Codeberg repos natively. That needs to be fixed.

@opencollective @josemanuel @Liberapay I don't want you following me, you guys are the worst nonsense I've ever seen. please unfollow me, I will never deal with your organzation again, and am deleting my account as soon as the money you are wasting my time releasing is in my bank account.

@opencollective close as I can tell, you exist to give yourself jobs, and use the 'open' part to justify that.

@opencollective @josemanuel @Liberapay but oddly not open at all when it comes to releasing funds... or the processes used to add the red tape of someone in your organization having any control of the funds at all, re approval. I'd soend less time on empty platitudes and more on fixing what's wrong in your process. And your website, which is one of the least open and clear things I've ever seen.I dislike this abuse of the term 'open' intensely. Symptomatic of the obvious corporate focus.

@tofugolem I've never used or even seen spotify, for this type of reason. It's not even good quality audio unless I believe you pay for the premium stream, though as noted, I don't, and won"t, use any of those music services. Buy the artist's work, see them live (and buy their tour merch, that's how they help defray touring costs), and skip these for profit streaming services. #flac #opus #ogg that I own, without #drm restrictions.

@tofugolem It just struck me, by going to one band's concert, and buying a t-shirt, that band made more from me in one evening than Weird Al made from 80 million spotify streams. Buying 2 of their digital albums would achieve the same result roughly. Plus I got to see a great show, and have a really good night out.

An interesting item, first, how can I tell when a post to me is a private message, and second, is there a way to pull a private message out of its sequence and turn it public? In general, I try to avoid private messages unless it's for very specific technical issues, or things that just should not be public. I just found myself in a thread that was private but I wanted it to be public. However, maybe the guy is right to keep it private for his own sake.I'll get the hang of this one day, lol.

@josemanuel ok, now to learn how to spot post is private. That's a simple clean rule though, thanks. Always a learning curve on these systems, but #mastodon is pretty well done overall imo.

@josemanuel but how do I know the post/message is private? I realize this is a dumb question, but this has hit me a few times now and it took me a while to realize it wasn't public. The only indication was the alert that popped up when I tried using a hashtag. That's actually the only reason I realized it was private. Generally private chats are only useful when talking to people I know or collaborate with, so I want to avoid this in future. Am I being blind or dense, lol? probably so.

@josemanuel the more but not less private rule is useful once I realize it's private, since I can say, if you want to continue, we will talk in public or not at all, and just stop it there. But I'm trying to avoid the start of it in the first place.

@josemanuel Found it:"An “@” symbol below the message will designate it as a post between users mentioned, whereas an earth icon indicates a post is in public view."too subtle for my taste, I'll have to learn how to spot that right away.

@josemanuel my concern is simple, I do not want to accidentally fall into private chats like I did today. the icons for this are too subtle for my taste, but I'm starting to focus on them to train my brain to register they have meaning. The other levels are fine, it's the private one I want to avoid unless it's being correctly applied for a real communication that should not be public. Presentation in past made icons more visible, today's fashion seems to be to make them tiny and faint.

@josemanuel that wasn't my explanation, should have added the link, that's from an intro to mastodon for new users. It was good enough to point to the right direction though.

@josemanuel I have to check more, but on another instance if I reply to a private message the reply box offers 3 levels, public, followers, and private. Didn't actually test though since don't want to bug the guy.I'm going to consider this solution as "less than ideal", it's too subtle, I prefer the dedicated pm, or at least, a very very obvious pm color/highlight where you simply can't confuse them. But now I see why I missed it, this is very subtle, and requires awareness when replying.

@futurebird I'm starting to wince every time I see someone use a term like gatekeeping. I think the reality of high schools not teaching programming etc is that they wouldn't have any teachers who can teach it. I don't know if you've ever really seen the inside of a college teacher education path, but it's not inspiring. But to me, the real problem with terms like gatekeeping is it hides the reality that to do anything useful with computers, you have to be able to research and solve problems.

@futurebird one of many ecological collapses humans are pretending can be negotiated away. There was a time not so long ago where ecology actually gained a voice and impacted policy but now... Not so much. Probably has something to do with what would actually be required for true mitigation then gradual return to sustainability. Hint: it's not a 2 to 5 ton EV.

@stux according to a blog post by someone who has worked with federated tech bluesky stores all the security certificates used to identify users in one central place on their servers and as of yet cannot figure out how to make those distributed. They are aware of this issue and may be trying to resolve it. Or vc investors may decide they like that barrier to entry. This makes actual cloning only theoretical. Also you have to clone the entire data structure. Large, growing. Expensive servers.

Here's #Roy on #Caturday doing his 2 favorite things: lying almost in the sun outside (he tends to avoid direct sunlight because his black fur gets too hot, so he will lie strategically right at the shades edge), and a few minutes later, after having a light lunch, staring at me from his 2 meter or so high top ledge box. He's probably trying to will me to give him a Delectables licky stick. Always worth a try!#Cats #CatsOfMastodon
