@apps Can you explain more about why my instance might not be aware of them? And how it is that you plan to work around that limitation from the client side?

@jeff This isn't a fully implemented answer but I think this documentation has clues: https://docs.joinmastodon.org/spec/webfinger/

@Wuzzy people are only going to tolerate their communities being ripped apart only so many times before they start to prioritize the technology (not to mention economic systems!) that are resilient to the problem of being taken over and destroyed by rich people.

Not my cat. Seems like he feels pretty at home on my porch furniture though. #caturday

@foone rust learner pro-tip: every time you get stuck on this crap just use clone() and pass by copy. You'll get a working program sooner, without having to learn the hardest parts of the language. You can come back later and optimize, depending on desire/necessity

@futurebird I really wanted to like these for aesthetic reasons but they were outperformed by even the most pedestrian of mechanical pencils.

@kimlockhartga I responded four or more but most of them are independent services, like Dropout, Nebula, and Corridor

@futurebird try using imagemagick's convert utility to convert the jpeg into a xpm file, which is something you can open in a standard text editor and make decent sense of

@futurebird hah that's a great spin on the classic "he has a face only a mother could love", i.e. "he has a face that's best viewed from a distance"

Okay if we're bringing back RSS, I need to know what the good readers are these days. I need something for Linux, MacOS, Windows, and Android. I'd prefer a native app but given the underlying tech, it's just going to end up being an embedded webview anyway, isn't it? So I guess something browser-based is fine as long as it's somewhere in the vicinity of open source, self hosted, or local.

@samir @marick unfortunately I have to agree here. In my anecdotal experience, the vast majority of software developers have experienced "agile" only from the perspective of being adulterated by a corporate buzzword-laden work management system. Of those who are even aware there is a manifesto, they probably haven't read it. And why would they? It's not like anything in there is going to apply to their job or convince management to change anything about the way they work.

@samir @marick P.S. sorry for being so cynical. I'm having a really hard time with the tech industry right now. And also for a long time before now.

@foone don't know if windows task view supports it but one way around this that I've used in the past is to make these type of apps visible on every desktop

@futurebird you "joke", but I have long wondered why Democrats are always playing the defense on e.g. Trans Rights when they should be playing the offense on Underage Child Marriage. Republicans should be constantly forced to talk about why they continue to defend it.

@baldur @stefanfrede if you already have a cloud storage provider and you can handle synchronizing the database to all your devices, I strongly recommend keepassxc over any other option. But if you need the convenience of someone else handling the cloud storage... I don't know, I guess I have to shrug and guess bitwarden along with everyone else. I was recommending 1password to normies up until today...

@futurebird LLMs not only can't count but they can't even stop from lying about being able to count because they don't know what counting is and they're just trained to shit out text that resembles what text looks like when someone has counted something.https://community.openai.com/t/serious-issues-with-accuracy-repeated-character-count-failures/1254636This is just the first practical example I could find but there are other examples similar to this. Like you cannot get LLMs to reliably play a game of chess without making an illegal move because they can't learn rules
