One of my favorite things about #PositConf2023: For years now, @hadleywickham urges attendees to follow the "Pacman rule": If you're standing in a group, make sure to leave space for someone else to join in. It's a nice way to set an inclusive environment.

You can now full-text-search public Mastodon posts! . . . IF1) the author has enabled full-text searching of their posts, and 2) both their and your Mastodon instances have upgraded to Mastodon version 4.2.0. and have installed Elasticsearch (which is an extra infrastructure cost). If available, you can enable full-text searching of *your* posts by clicking Edit profile and selecting "Privacy and reach" in the top navigation bar. Then check "Include public posts in search results".

@tuxicoman For non admins, as I was on Fosstodon before moving to my own instance, the instance's Elasticsearch lets you full text search on your own posts and posts you liked or boosted, but not all other posts known to the instance.

@simon I think some people are annoyed that LLMs take skill, iteration, and patience to learn and use well. The dream was that they'd know exactly what we need after just one generic question about a complex request. It would be helpful if people evaluate them for what they are, not based on an unrealistic sci-fi vision. (They definitely help me answer questions about my code. They will not, however, write a complex app from scratch based on a 1-sentence prompt.)

@simon @AnthonyBaker This could be kind of fun to use with some of the press releases I receive šŸ˜€ I tried making a RAG GPT. I'm still not clear if you can upload multiple document files to a custom GPT or just one. More documentation would be nice.

@simon @AnthonyBaker I also couldn't see any way to make a custom GPT cite and display the portions of the document it uses for its answer, which is something I definitely want in a RAG chatbot. (Maybe there is a way if you know the instructions to give it, but none of my attempts have worked yet.)

@simon The idea that you accept a $10B+ investment from a for-profit public company yet think you can somehow still keep the whole organization operating as a non-profit was kind of insane (at least in the US economy). The fact that they didn’t give Nadella advanced warning and then announced Altman's firing *while the stock market was open* did not exactly inspire confidence. I had assumed there was some critical time urgency involved. But it was just incompetence.

@simon I couldn’t help myself, I asked GPT-4 for 10 ideas to rename Python virtual environment. (I used phind.com, they give you 10 free GPT-4 queries per day)

ā€œIf you would like to access Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem from R, check out the new CDSE package. With CDSE, you can easily connect your R environment to the vast satellite imagery collection from Sentinel missions. The best part is that you no longer need to download the complete image tiles distributed by Copernicus (100 x 100 km), but you can instead retrieve satellite data limited to your area of interest.ā€ - Zivan Karaman @Karamanhttps://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/CDSE/index.html#rstats @rstats

You can run large language models locally in the Opera browser developer version. I just added that option to ā€œ5 easy ways to run an LLM locallyā€ (now more than 5 as I keep updating the #InfoWorld article, but SEO best practices blah blah)https://www.infoworld.com/article/3705035/5-easy-ways-to-run-an-llm-locally.html#GenAI #AI #LLMs

What happens when you mandate masks at a conference now that most people no longer wear them but medically vulnerable people are still at risk because #CovidIsNotOver? In the case of #PyConUS, the conference sells out.Why a masking policy? ā€œMany of us and our fellow community members can’t attend without health and safety guidelines in place. We want PyCon US to be an event that everyone feels safe attending,ā€ organizers explained.Well done @pycon https://fosstodon.org/@pycon/112445571644276379

This lengthy prompt example posted by Wharton professor Ethan Mollick turns an LLM into a tutor. Yes, you could just ask a chatbot to help you learn something. But this approach helps ensure students are guided in a specific way.Blog post: https://www.oneusefulthing.org/p/innovation-through-promptingPaper: Instructors as Innovators: a Future-focused Approach to New AI Learning Opportunities, With Prompts https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4802463#GenAI #GenerativeAI #AI #LLMs

@mekkaokereke @jupiter Not much history of Americans who supported Hitler is taught in the US.* Henry Ford, a virulent antisemite, was an inspiration to Hitler and received the Nazi regime's highest honor for foreigners. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2023/11/henry-ford-anti-semitism/675911/?gift=Vw7jowAt4TJWcg2vvOSAndW9IYjhKgBbwPuzrmkBZIc&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share* Many know of Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics. Fewer know that the US replaced 2 Jewish runners at the last minute (Owens objected but was overruled) https://www.cnn.com/2015/07/31/sport/germany-berlin-jewish-olympics-maccabi/index.html* There was a big pro-Hitler rally in NY in 1939 https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/americans-hold-nazi-rally-in-madison-square-garden

@mekkaokereke @jupiter Ford's pro-Nazi activities does not seem to have diminished his reputation much in America. I learned about Ford's factory assembly lines in school. The Nazi stuff I learned elsewhere. There's still a major hospital bearing his name in Detroit.

@mekkaokereke @jupiter Jesse Owens is a real hero in my eyes, not only for what he achieved at the Olympics and elsewhere, but for being such an ally to his Jewish teammates in Berlin in 1936. Glickman later recalled Owens saying: ā€Coach, I’ve won three gold medals. Let Marty and Sam run. They deserve it."Owens tried to give up his chance for his 4th gold medal in the 4 x 100 relay race to be an ally for his teammates. What an incredibly selfless act.
