Schon irgendwie lustig. Früher war meine Fediverse Timeline volle Animetiddies weil hier so viele Weebs unterwegs sind.Jetzt aber kaum mehr, dafür gibt es ein, zwei Parteikollegen, die mir auf Twitter die Timelines damit voll spülen.

I think we have passed the peak of internet and Software ComfortNetflix - decliningTwitter - destroying itselfAlexa - budget cuts because they cannot make money with itThe growth has stoppen and the investors realize that they cannot transform their market share into profit as easily as they thought.I just hope this isn't a bubble that is about to pop.

@quad I paid almost the same for my Tuxedo Aura 15 and didn't get Thunderbold. Although with adding warranty and similar specs I arrive at over 3k, oh no.

@quad I can run with CPU locked at minimal clock speed without any issues and still play Minecraft at 1080p. Lots of ram was the most importand decision because I am used to running multiple ff instances with dozens of tabs ^^Also I intentionally choose a model with a modem and without any dGPU. I kinda missed the modem before and couldn't be bothered to mess around with prime any more.

@quad I am the total opposite in terms of distro hopping and disposable configurations. Everything on my Laptop almost a decade worth of configuring and dist upgrading. And backed up to 2 locations because I am paranoid af. If my Laptop dies I would probably need months to recover without any backup. And still with backup it would take a good week.Although most of the important data is inside my nextcloud and most of the folders inside my home folder are software repositories.

It will be a few months until it is really needed, but I am currently looking for a solution to synchronize in the order of 10 - 100 TB of data across the globe. Most of the data will be left untouched as an archive, so io will not be an issue for the first few years. There is a central instance planned plus multiple "cache locations" (2 currently) where the files are replicated and accessed. Ideally files that have not been used for a while would be deleted from those caches. Local Computers would then use the Cache as a NAS or connect to the cache while using their own hard drive as a cache. In theory this could be achieved by using a nextcloud server with clients choosing which files they synchronize or using the on-demand feature on Windows. That would be the "low-effort" solution.I am currently researching CEPH and GlusterFS. The latter seems to be better currently. CEPH just seems to be overkill since I do not want to replicate across so many nodes. The issue is, I do not find any information about performance when dealing with cross-continent latency between the nodes.

TIL: There is something called a "ping bandwith product" that specifies how much data is "on the way".If your latency increases you might have to increase certain values like net.ipv4.tcp_{r,w} (man tcp is apparently wrong about net.core.{r,w}mem_max limiting the latter)The image should work pretty well to estimate the throttled bandwidth.

@quad If you ever consider quitting, please give me a heads up. We will definitely have the need to additional sysadmins in the future.

@quad I am currently struggling with "inventing" a system that can keep 100TB data synced across continents if that sounds interesting to you.Actually, having someone in Helsinki close to Hetzners server farm might be very useful if we want to go colocation at some point :D

@wolf480pl I hope the people of poland are currently roasting their government for making a big fuss about delivering Leopards but then then nopeing out of this and leaving Germany as pretty much the only country delivering meaningful numbers of tanks.Have you read the comment from our defense minister?*Asked if he could understand countries that pushed Germany to send such advanced weapons systems to Ukraine and were now not delivering their own, he said: “As I’m in a diplomatic arena right now, I would just say — not much.”*https://www.ft.com/content/49233164-d28b-4d7d-868c-88e642e28e0b

@wolf480pl oh, the paywall wasn't there when I accessed it, here is a paywall free version:https://12ft.io/proxy?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ft.com%2Fcontent%2F49233164-d28b-4d7d-868c-88e642e28e0bAlso as a general consent among the Military community which Tank is better than the other does not really matter since the amount of Tank vs Tank duels is rather small. Numbers count. Leo1 are relatively light which allows wider deployment and without reconsidering Terrain for Ukrainian army.

@quad How much time do I have left until the shutdown?I am struggling a bit with myself whether I want to host my own instance or not. I am tending towards mastodon. It is more "heavy" but the most likely to survive as a project in the long term.Or I'll yolo and use Nextclouds Social Plugin (if it ever become usable)

@izaya I keep forwarding Hutchins quote on this, it goes something like this:"Complaining about tiktok being spyware is like watching someone building a nuke and telling everyone he will bash someone in the head with the tools."Sure, that is technically a logical warning but you are missing the point

@izaya > grammatically dubious but the best we've gotAt least it is not a clusterfuck like in Germany, where we are still figuring out what to do with our goddamn endings. With half a dozens endings, gender specific plural forms and gender fixed Job Names.
