It's also just boring & repetitive to read about. I didn't use twitter much before Musk bought it, I didn't come here looking for a twitter replacement. Lots of people on the fediverse don't want this to just be a drop-in twitter replacement, and for good reason.

JFC when did all of these websites start requiring you to send in a picture of your photo ID to buy a vape battery on the internet? Anecdotally it was definitely within the last year and I fucking hate this.

Like these aren't even actually age restricted themselves. They are batteries. They are just pretty much only used for nicotine and (in my case) cannabis products. But like come on.

Why in the name of Al Gore's green internet would I send a photo of my ID over an unsecure connection to whoever the fuck, to buy something which I do not even need to show ID to buy in a store

@vfrmedia @clive @autumn @thomasfuchs Yes, also right hand drive vehicles are often legal and not exactly common, but not unheard of in some areas here (around where I live, mostly Japanese domestic imports)And, let me tell you, if you want a great light truck, you could do a lot worse than a JDM kei truck

@vfrmedia @clive @autumn @thomasfuchs I'm also totally obsessed with their tiny fire trucks. Imagine rolling up with the squad in this bad boy blaring music on the sirenThere's a dealership near here that sells these for like $8K and every day I have to stop myself from selling everything I own and moving into one

@thomasfuchs @vfrmedia @clive @autumn Oh man I figured "kei truck towing" would be a great image search, and I was not disappointedIt's true, they're not exactly dual-wheel F150's

@mttaggart Reminds me of how many news sites autoplay a video even though I came to read an articleThey're serving us up whatever they want, not whatever we want.Side note: I never want a car with a touch screen in it, I really appreciate being able to use all of the knobs and buttons by feel without having to look at them. Also I don't want that much blue light coming from the interior of my car while I'm driving at night. Unsafe.

What an absolute shocker that the fediverse would be hit with massive waves of spam right after threads started federating

@pluralistic @mttaggart @neurovagrant This is why I don't understand what this type of AI is "for"People are like "you can use it to write a novel" but I actually like writing novels, I don't want to skip that part.People are like "you can use it to summarize a text" but how can I trust it?I just don't see a use case. I've been feeling like I live in the Emperor's New Clothes for like a year now.LLM's replace typing. The difficult part of writing/coding etc is not the typing.

@ThunderHoneySnow Yeah, it can be kinda intense how wildly varying different people's definitions of "we're being very careful" is. Leads to some odd conversations and head scratching situations like you're describing.I talked to one person whose version of being careful about covid was flying first class instead of coach because "you're not around all those people"I was just like uhhh

@anderspuck I would recommend Ghost for thathttps://ghost.org/I don't have paid subscriptions on my blog, but it has support for that. And everything else is very easy and straightforward.

One of my favorite/least favorite things about college was when professors would use out of print books as required texts. It was a great litmus test.Cool professors would hook you up with a xerox'd copy for free.Losers would make you hunt down a copy of a $200 book. (fortunately in these situations we students would usually form groups to share a few copies of the expensive books)

A similar vibe was professors who used their own books as textbooks. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with this! As a control freak myself I totally get it.Cool professors would hook you up with a free copy, or maybe one minus the cost of printing.Losers would use it as an excuse to pump up their sales numbers.

@DrPsyBuffy I totally expected the pandemic - it was in the media, we were statistically overdue for one. I had been keepinng a stockpile of N95 masks for like 15 years because I figured when the next pandemic hit they might be hard to get.I could never have predicted masking becoming a political issue and when the first anti-mask protests started I had a sinking feeling that we were never really, truly going to recover from this pandemic. That sinking feeling hasn't fully gone away.

@grammargirl I don't mean to be disrespectful to anyone but I used to have a job where at the end of every shift we were supposed to write up a couple paragraphs about what happened on shift. My opinion of my fellow Americans literacy went way the fuck down.Like forget the finer points of grammar, spelling, and conventions, many of my coworkers simply had trouble writing down sentences they would have no trouble saying, like "Carl arrived at 7PM and left later at 9PM"
