The issue of storage needed for self-hosting Mastodon is starting to pop up. You need to have LOTS of room on your VPS if you are selfhosting. My own Mastodon is 1 year old. At first, 1GB of RAM & a few 10Gs of space was needed. But with more connections & relays my RAM and space requirements shot up. It now requires 5.5GB of RAM. I switched to a new Minio instance 3 days ago and in THREE days it has 20GB stored in the new Minio bucket.People, get ready.#s3 #minio #selfhost #peoplegetready

@boilingsteam True, I suppose. What I hope remains is the ability to block instances who go that route. Unlike twitter, where I have to view the ads because the whole thing "is the instance", federation gives that control back to users/instances. Hopefully, also, users of various instances realize that pitching in to help their community also happens so they don't need ads. #stayfree #dontshowmeads #adssuck #federatedandfree

@stux Have you considered using an S3 backend for this? On my single-user self-hosted Mastodon instance, following 170 accounts, with a Live Feed on, I generate over 30GB a month, but it's all stored on my other self-hosted Minio instance, so the server Mastodon is running on never has to worry about not enough space.

I'm curious why any users want to preserve 3 years worth of their content? They post and off it goes into the activitypub slipstream. Mastodon isn't a blog or a website, but more like surfing. You surf each wave once.Pixelfed or Peertube are different in that they produce static content, but their structure allows 3-year-old content to be findable/viewable. Some users might be better off using something like https://writefreely.org/, https://dokie.li/#introduction, https://github.com/Plume-org/Plume.

FWIW, I used to run Syscoin, SIA, and LiteCoin on my laptop...it's been at least 2 years. So today I downloaded the apps from their sites, and linked them to the previous db directories... ONLY Litecoin continued on where the previous version left off. The other two... indecipherable error messages. Litecoin for the win. #litecoin

You know, I hate admitting defeat, but trying to increase the max upload size for a docker-compose installed Nextcloud is ridiculous. Yo, Nostr! Listen up. So many apps promise total control over my own data, my own connections. But then they ASK ME TO ENTER MY PRIVATE KEY. Do you not realize how stupid and counter-productive this is? I simply can’t login on iOS because almost all the Nostr clients want me to enter my private key. What’s the point then?
