@eolach A pattern I keep seeing on Fedi is unhelpful "You should do X" posts in response to problems that completely fail to take into account that different people have different needs.Usually it's "you should run your own instance". Telling a black person to open themselves up to racist abuse and grow a thicker skin, though? That's a new one on me.And telling a black person to use a "whitelist"? At best, very thoughtless.

@eolach Speech comes with consequences, and the consequence for blatant racism is getting blocked. Blocking racist abuse is no more building an echo chamber than spam filtering is; there's no value there. This isn't some weird long tail thing. mastodon.social blocks detroitriotcity. Blocking racists is pretty mainstream, even if you decide to only complain about it to small black-run instances. 🤔...

@eolach Mostly, though, if you think people who can't handle abuse shouldn't be on the internet, you're hanging out in the wrong places. There are billions on the internet now, and most people don't think receiving abuse is an integral part of it. Most people don't think free speech is about enabling the racist abuse of strangers.Find better people to hang out with before you start believing Ayn Rand made sense.

@nach Aw, did you get "triggered" by me simply suggesting non-inclusive language is thoughtless? You look really very offended by that. You seem to have accidentally wandered into mainstream Fedi, and that must be very confusing to you. Don't worry, I'll block you and you won't have to see my scary posts again.Still, 👍 to all that free speeching you're doing there, with the naughty words and stuff. I bet your mom's proud of that.

@eolach Let's start with terminology:1. Your switching from saying "blocklist" in earlier to "blacklist" here isn't subtle.2. The use of language is to communicate with people. "Whitelist" and "blacklist" are less precise than e.g. allowlist and denylist, and have "white = good, black = bad" connotations. To assume technical conversions have no social aspect is facile.3. As such, saying "You should use a whitelist" to a black person makes you look ignorant or offensive....

@eolach Mostly, though, this comes down to goals. If you want to communicate effectively, if you want a black person to consider your views on handling racism on Fedi, you might show awareness of relevant use of language. On the other hand, if you just want to say what you like, free speech style, do what you like. When it becomes clear that you have no interest in being listened to, people block or mute you, and that's working as intended.

@eolach On to the technical side: Fedi has plenty of precedent in other systems. Usenet and email both use allow-by-default with blocking for bad actors. This makes sense when the number of good actors massively outweigh the bad actors. If you propose allowlists, can you name a successful *large scale* social system that runs off allowlists?

@eolach So, to summarise the conversation so far:"Free speech" has consequences. Blocking abuse, like blocking spam, is good.Deny lists have a multi-decade successful track record in large-scale social systems, unlike allow lists. The choice of words is important if you want to communicate effectively, technical conversations always have a social element.

I'm happy with this: An emulated classic (24-bit 68K) Mac with 5MB of RAM. No original classic Mac had >4MB of RAM as the ROM got in the way (*). I've patched the ROM & System 6 to support a relocated ROM. The main constraint on increasing RAM to e.g. 15MB is now the memory-mapped I/O, which also needs relocation. The eventual goal is a physical large-memory classic Mac.(*) The Mac Portable's ROM location allows up to 9MB of RAM, but it's a bit weird, and I'm going for the full 15+MB.

I'm now drawing with the Macintosh Portable on 9MB for a 24-bit Mac. Moving the SCSI hardware out of the way was easy, finding the assumption of a maximum of 8MB RAM in the MoveHHi system call, OTOH, was a right pain. Perhaps I should have started with the Mac Portable ROM. Ah well.

Now up to 13MB of RAM, comfortably exceeding the Mac Portable. Possibly the most RAM a classic Mac has ever seen, even if it's virtual. :p

Last one I promise (for now :p).15.5MB is as far as I think worth's trying with a 24-bit (16MB address space) Mac. The rest goes to ROM (256KB) and memory-mapped I/O.Next steps are probably to see if System 7 will run (complete with MultiFinder, to use all that RAM) and run a bunch of classic apps to exercise the thing. Then, at some point I should work out what drivers to write to make this work on a DIY Mac clone...

@mattblaze Reply guy had a point that if you want to deprogram people who've gone down the rabbit hole, simply contradicting them with the truth isn't very effective.OTOH, it doesn't have to be *your* job to deprogram them, and as a researcher it probably shouldn't be your job to do so.Some people like B&W photography, some people like colour photography. It's dumb to demand people switch styles, and dumb to suggest everyone use low-saturation colour. Also, I'm crap at metaphor.

Assembly. You need it to reverse copy protection, and once you're good at it every task looks like a nail for that hammer. I've heard that some will use Matlab, though.

@dangoodin Someone rooted kernel.org... and they used it to send spam?!Seems a bit unambitious compared to e.g. backdooring the kernel or something.
