And, I also write about the pedagogical pitfalls surrounding sociological theory and, more generally, the state of sociological theoryhttps://sethabrutyn.com/2019/09/20/the-pedagogical-dead-end-known-as-classical-sociological-theory/

@publius there is plenty of room for contextually specific theory. I’m not opposed to it. But an entire class that is really the “history” of sociology masquerading as sociological theory should either call itself that or do something diff. In my experience undergrad and grad students like the approach bc most aren’t theorists and don’t want to be. They just want to know why durkheim matters to their own research or experience. That’s it.

@publius the question sociologists haven’t answered yet is whether it is to be like physics or biology. The latter is more likely. An overarching theoretical framework (evolution) with some formal theorizing (genetics). But these are still open questions.

Does Mastodon allow you to translate toots? I follow a ton of German sociologists, but cannot understand their toots, and desperately want to.

I already did an #introduction, but not officially. I am an American living in BC as a professor of #sociology. I am a theorist, by trade, and #ethnographer by necessity, and a photographer when no one is looking. My interests center a classic sociological question: how does the structure/culture of a place shape behavior &, how can these things be changed.I study adolescent #suicide, suicide clusters, helpseeking, etc. I also study religious & political #evolution. And, etiquette, baseball,
