That's to influence just one critter's vote. Figure on spending that on hundreds of critters. But Federal drug prohibition is unconstitutional (without a new prohibition amendment) - and states are successfully nullifying the federal statues. Hopefully, some states will continue to prohibit it. It was a shame when the last dry state legalized alcohol - and addicts no longer had a legally enforced refuge (other than holing up in a recovery center).Also, mix of wet and dry states made for colorful situations on the borders. https://www.sobpedro.com/

There is also an altruistic aspect to insurance. Your premiums are funding the defense of other victims. In a well run insurance company, premiums pretty much match expenses, and profits come from investing the reserves.

I did this for transportation - to try and convince my wife that driving a car was not, in fact, safer than biking. I don't remember the absolute numbers, but biking and walking were the lowest risk of death or serious injury per mile traveled for personal transportation, and nearly the same (the Williamsburg colonists were onto some with their walking helmets).Driving a car is three times more dangerous than walking/biking per mile.Riding a motorcycle is 5 times more dangerous than driving a car (which is maybe where her false intuition comes from). In fact, motorcycles are equivalent risk to active duty in the Iraq war (as an American - we prefer to kill people from other nations to feed the MIC).Buses and trains were 5 times safer than cars - i.e. safer than walking/biking. I take my bike on both quite a bit for longer distances.Airplane travel was the safest of all per mile (this would be 2005, when I sold my car and got a bicyle). I wonder about it now that many pilots are dropping dead from the mandated Pfizer shots and airlines are considering relaxing copilot requirements.

This was US transportation stats - averaging city and country. The problem with country roads, is they are narrow and twisty with no shoulder or bike path/lane - and are actually quite dangerous when you encounter a car, even if there are fewer cars. Cities and suburbs have extensive bicycle infrastructure, with a network of "no motorized vehicles" paths and lanes. Plus "secret" routes where no car could ever go that are fun to discover.

@Nazareno Russia is so obviously different today than before 1990 - I don't understand why people insist that the Soviet Union is still a thing. What do you call the system of govt in Russia today? The best term I've heard is "autocratic libertarian". That described to a T what it is like. Putin doesn't care what you do, even practice with military weapons on your back acres. Except threaten his power. If you manage that, you might get pushed from an upper story window. (Arguably better than Arkancide.)On the other hand, the US in the last two years has become "China with drag queens." Pervasive surveillance. Lawfare, Govt controlled speech on Big Tech platforms. @Nazareno It's not as simple as "Israel bad". The US is arming and funding both sides. The US promoted and armed Hamas to get rid of Yassir Arafat. Now they have provided Hamas with $6 billion through Iran and weapons through Ukraine and Afghanistan. They have directly funded and armed Israel. They are using Hamas (no way the initial attack was simply Israeli incompetence) to create a casus belli to start a new war. A better summary is "US Deep State bad". Israel is just as much a victim. I do not know how much the current govt there is complicit.The entire govt media in the US ("MSM") is using the mantra "This is Israel's Pearl Harbor or 9/11". (When will the smaller nations learn not to accept "gifts" from the US govt/NGOs?) But the Gaza side is not squalid because of Israel.

@Nazareno I can sure agree with US staying out of this. US meddling is turning it from a fight between Israel and Gaza to WW3. The neocons planned this in 1998 - and provoking a "circle of fire" of angry Muslim nations around Israel to justify a war against Iran was the last step. They don't seem to realize that the US is bankrupt, there are no volunteers, and no weapons. They'll have to go full totalitarian like Ukraine and start rounding up people on the streets to go get blown up by IEDs in the Middle East.

@jorge @vwbusguy @siosm I use btrfs snapshots to have multiple Fedora versions in /boot and root. Name your snapshot f38 or f39, and put that in the grub config for the kernel. I always do this when upgrading or trying out the beta. And even after switching, I keep a read-only snap of the older systems.I also do this with LVM when btrfs is not an option.This is with regular Fedora - not Silverblue or whatever. I wasn't clear whether that was a requirement from your comment.If it is just the kernel you want to try, just install it from rawhide, and there is automatically a fallback for several versions (number configurable in dnf.conf).
