To add extra suffering to ourselves, on top of the natural suffering we endure, just seems like the work of a crazy person! And yet, we are looked at strangely when we suggest it's ok to do less.

The fetishism for MORE is, I think, a modern curse. We live in fear of being left behind and outcompeted, and in fear of being shouted at for delivering less than 100%. "MORE" is inherently linked up with "correct".

To do less is to stop competing. We equate it with giving up, with failure. 90% is "good". 50% is "meh". 0% is "outcast".And yet, when we are doing and achieving nothing, we have all the potential in the world ahead of us. To stop competing is to start listening.

@ShaunBartoneIt is funny how "speculative fiction" is now a "serious" thing, as if we'd never thought of storytelling as a guide to future and action before. Stories have always been there to inspire us...

@ShaunBartoneGood step. I think this is what I like about tai chi as meditation - when I started, I realised I had to learn to unlearn all the movement and thought that I'd picked up in life. But relaxing is not the end goal, but forms a medium/structure/mode that allows the chi to flow, turning relaxation into awareness/energy/force. Do you find yourself moving/acting differently at all, afterwards?

@ShaunBartoneTrying is doomed to over-exertion. Stop reflecting on it, get back to what you were originally doing!

@ShaunBartoneNever hire a guide just to tell you what the view is like. And never get to a place expecting the weather to be perfect...

Thinking about Amazon and Uber and the huge rise of delivery-as-a-service. Is that the obvious profit area when hyperconsumerism is the norm? What does that say about our own attachment to sourcing, scarcity, and simple/restrictive living?

@ShaunBartone @simsa02 Thanks - two very different ways of seeing it, and the two sides of the story, perhaps. I used Amazon to deliver something to a campsite in France last week, which it would have been a pain to get hold of otherwise. Maybe I should have been more organised in the first place though.Perhaps, as with all purchasing, it's more about why we do it, and what we do if we can't get it that's important. The thing itself is just a thing.

Hey #solarpunk and electronics peeps. Is there any advantage to using either DC or USB to transfer charging, if there's a choice about it? Thinking solar panels to Li-ion cells.

@orbifx Like my solar panels have a 5V (ish) USB output, and a 12V DC output, and some batteries have a USB in and a separate DC in. If I have that choice, I wonder which one is better to use?

@orbifx Also, any good recommendations for Amazon alternatives for electronics? A lot of the chinese factories seem to just output directly to there for their supply chain to the West now... #solarpunk

@orbifx What's interesting about regional stats is that London and the SE have more to lose under Brexit. And I think that's actually a reason why a lot of people elsewhere voted for Brexit - to remind politicians that other areas exist and have been forgotten about.

@ShaunBartone @tim So what's the best way of meeting the future? :) I'd be happy to fund via whatever means, but maybe it's worth a chat (XMPP?) if there are multiple or related costs, or other time/effort/etc needed.I guess options are keep this instance going, someone else set up a new one, or default to a no-deal agreement ;-)

@ShaunBartoneHave suspected this recently - everything has its own nature, yet we constantly try to force each thing to have the nature of something else.

@cathalHmm, for solar panels I'd guess current changes according to solar input, as it does with USB normally. Noise and cable quality/lengths probably a bigger factor in the system as a whole? @orbifx

@fitheachI carry cash, but have fallen out of this habit. On the downside for businesses, handling and tracking cash can be risky and time consuming - going to a bank for change may require closing up, and the eco store I was in recently had their till robbed a few days before. I do like the idea of less overheads for payment. I think it's good to have conversations with local, indie shops to see what they prefer. @orbifx
