@stefan @evana @mastodonmigration yes, if this is a server feature and not a client one, then my concern goes away. But I can 100% guarantee you that there is a small group of people that do this for very positive and supportive reasons that will be quite miffed if we do this (which just might be necessary!)This is why I'm trying to find other ways of looking at this problem. I want to solve it! Just trying to find the right lever.

@tomjennings @stefan @evana @mastodonmigration Of course not. I'm just saying I open source software has these arguments all the time and we need to be respectful of others

We need to talk more about reducing "tone policing" here. I understand you want people to use content warnings, but guess what? They don't have to! If they don't do it, just unfollow them. But please, don't harass them. That's what drove away our last big wave.Do whatever you need to feel safe, but harassing people to your standards doesn't make THEM feel safe. Stop it.

I've already had a few randos in my mentions trying to tell me either:1) It's ok to correct people if done politelyJust because you use polite words doesn't mean it's polite. If you're giving people advice they didn't ask for, you're harassing them.2) My request was a form of tone policingAsking people to not harass others is not "tone policing", it's basic trust and safety. It's that classic sad defence that "you're intolerant too!" if you call out intolerance.Ummmm, no

Normally I wouldn't engage but I feel strongly we need to have this discussion and call out this almost entirely white male issue. The entire Mastodon team is working really hard to add features to bring in more people, in a safe way. It doesn't do any good if these guys just chase them away!

@ricci @thibaultamartin Thank you! That is such nuanced way to explain it. I'm not against CWs at all and I do hope communities find better ways to use them.

@wjmaggos I appreciate your points, we all want this to be an inclusive, safe place. My only issue is that giving people advice they didn't ask for, is still aggressive. It doesn't matter if you use nice words. This needs to be solved at the instance level. Police your instance all you want, get the culture you want there. But leave other instances alone. It just doesn't scale to think you can "fix" the other 10000.If they're not doing it the way you want, then unfollow them

@wjmaggos As an old white guy, I've had a personal journey here. It's taken me awhile to understand that being comfortable with being corrected is a privileged place. To see that others didn't have this same comfort level was a big step, but it was also difficult to see how correcting people without being asked is an intrusion. It may be welcome some of the time, but it's still an intrusion. But this is a very general point. I'm just saying to do this over CWs just feels so unnecessary.

One of my earliest UX wins was for Mac System 7. The Finder team wanted to truncate files names with '…' if it wouldn’t fit. I argued that too much critical info would be lost and suggested it be in the middle instead. The Finder team loved it and implemented it later that day. They were so easy to work with.I'd totally forgotten about it until I overheard someone commenting it was an example of Apple's attention to detail. I'd didn't say anything at the time but yeah, that was me ;-)

What I so enjoyed about the Finder team was that there was no string utility to remove the middle of the string. They had to write it themselves. It was extra work they just took on. I never heard a peep from them about "implementation complexity".It's experiences like this that have spoiled me. When I hear over (and over) that UX needs to "work within business goals" I think back to this experience where I just had an idea... and they did it. Why was it so easy then, and so hard now?

I'm noticing a trend that people aren't signing their emails as often. It's clearly redundant (and a holdover from snail mail) but it was expected. Do you sign your emails today?

Yesterday, I noticed a table view with a hover highlight that just felt "flickery." It reminded me of a harsh fluorescent lightbulb. Sure, it worked. It's even what we expect. But inspired by Amber Case and her "Calm Technology" manifesto, I wondered if there was a way to make this simple, even trivial, interaction feel more analogue and calm.I tried a few things and explain them in this one-minute video.

In today's profit-driven, move-fast-and-break-things mentality, this type of exploration may feel out of place. But that's the whole point; we've lost what's important and why we're here in the first place. What does this type of thinking unlock? You can play with this on my website: https://jenson.org/x/highlight.htmlWhat would you do differently? This is an experiment, not a solution. I hope there are other, better ideas to try.

My Ubuntu Summit talk is up! Where I talk about:1. How Desktop UX is effectively dead 2. Why I hate the term UX/UI with the heat of 1000 suns3. How OSS can actually innovate in #ux https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fZTOjd_bOQ

RE: https://social.coop/@scottjenson/115707071905814326There are 300K+ views on Youtube of my talk! I've never had a talk get this amount of traction. I'm a bit in shock. It's confusing as I've been speaking/writing about this for years. Somehow the stars aligned this time.Upside is that I've had lots of interesting conversations with folks because of this.

There was a recent poll here about what Desktop OS you use and Linux was the most popular answer. This proves this community is far more technical than your average consumer.I'm not critical of that, I'm just saying we need to appreciate we aren't representative of that vast majority of people out there. I can't even get "normies" to *consider* joining the fediverse. I don't want to "chase numbers" I want my family members to be safe but we're doing a terrible job attracting them.

@picofarad I know lots of people that are tired of Twitter and want a more sane alternative. The Fediverse is a strong alternative, but there are "baddies" out there chasing people away for things like not using CWs properly. I'm saying we just need to be a little more inclusive. This shouldn't be something that needs to be said.

RE: https://dair-community.social/@emilymbender/115833119822086661We really have a problem here. Good people are being mansplained/harassed off of the platform. (It's been a problem for years actually)It just takes just 1% of us to make this place feel overwhelmingly bad. 99% of us are lovely, tolerant people. We can't let these victims fend for themselves. Call out reply guy/mansplaining/(or worse) behavior. We fix this by supporting each other. We get the culture we tolerate.

And don't trot out that tired "but you're being intolerant too!" bullshit. That's the line all attackers try to hide behind.
