@internetarchive @brewsterkahle Harry Smith says to keep up the fight. He did start this.

@tomjennings You can extend this to any deep supply chain product: medical, skyscraper, etc. Deep supply chains hide the petroleum magic that makes them work. https://genugreen.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/flow-chart-for-products-from-petroleum-based-feedstocks.png

@hyc This addresses related issues, including "we need all kinds of positive change" problem. MEER is the only top-level systems view I'm aware of that addresses fundamental problems of climate. Ye Tao does address the complicated supply chain/petroleum issue as well. https://www.meer.org/firstprinciples

@tomjennings Check out Unison https://github.com/bcpierce00/unison/ You'd have to do some scripting/OS stuff, but it is fast, works well, and runs on most anything. The extra control might not be a bad thing. I ran owncloud (or nextcloud... I forget) for awhile, and dumped it after a year.

@kev I've been doing tech since Apple ][, and even earlier if you count my acoustic coupler connections to my dad's minicomputer in the early 1970s. After all I have seen, what blows my mind is the completeness, consistency, and flexibility of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript standards on MDN and W3C, combined with the tightly related concept of knowledge graphs (shown on Tim Berners-Lee's famous WWW picture as well, so related). This means the last time was yesterday (I'm stuck in a UUID hell today).

@tomjennings Gysin/William S Burroughs' cutup method is an interesting variation on that idea, no? It brought us some great Bowie songs (Not sure if Bob Dylan ever admitted it or not, but I swear some of his stuff is from cutups.)

@tomjennings I enjoy that one. I've been following your art and Rambler wrenching adventures since the wps com days, but I forgot about that one until you posted just now. What is particularly interesting (to me) is that I had no idea about cutups the first time I read that, so I was just thinking "cool, weird electronic stuff". My memory was I first found your stuff searching for various Rambler how-to articles. I can also relate to "wanting to know" as building something from scratch.

@tomjennings Funny... I didn't have any idea about FidoNet until recently. It was always just your Rambler American 100inch wheelbase w/ the best looking front suspension of any Rambler and some Nixie Tube art. 17 years went by, and a year ago I dreamed about your Navarro engine: https://orng.org/#πŸŠπŸ”ΈπŸ“πŸ”ΈπŸ’€πŸ”Έ191So... even my unconscious mind has you and AMC related, I guess. Here is a question: Dreams are supposed to be aspects of ourselves. What aspect of myself is Tom Jennings?

@stux Very true, and a great distinction as far as what monetization does from a platform ownership perspective. Other aspects remain (pursuit of power and prestige through followers, ego), but this is an important distinction, regardless. Tip 'o the hat to all the Fedi admins out there.I am guilty of my Fedi feed affecting my mental health. Old habits... an addiction I picked up from the old monetized platforms that I'm not on anymore. Life was better when I just wrote web articles blind.

@tomjennings Does your front suspension color match your dashboard? Is that the only match? (I only ask because when I did mine, I compared with yours, and as usual, my work was way below yours. I seem to remember they were bright yellow, but this pic is more a schoolbus yellow.)
