@xenophile @chadloder if you try to block content for kids on networks you don't control, they'll just go out of their way to see what it is you're so concerned about on a network you don't.

@chrisisgr8 the biggest thing these days is the package management system, the packages & versions chosen, and the release cycle. The init system used to be more of a thing but most distros have settled on systemd these days. Bootloader also matters. Oh! And governance models vary really widely.

@team the call to action here falls a little flat IMO. Like, I definitely want to share this and make others aware but the only thing that we can do is toot about it? How the hell is that supposed to help?

@jonny the theft of non-scarce resources is a good and natural reaction to the hoarding of those resources, as the hoarding is inherently immoral and unnecessary for resources that are not scarce.

@vees in the time that I've gone through 3 or 4 thinkpads (as in motherboard replacements) and an HP laptop (which still works but is really just too outdated to use), @owen is still using his 2012 Macbook Pro. We've had to replace the battery a few times but that's it. I'm just saying I want repairability without having to repair it so frequently haha

I tell you, whatever revolution you see, against the oppressive authoritarian state and capital which it protects, may it come to pass. However, on the other side, you will still find me a radical. I care more for this planet than most of those aligned with me seem to care to understand.

Here's an example:Honey should not be a commodity. Period. You should not be able to purchase honey, you shouldn't regularly find it as a component in your food, unless you exist in a very specific lifestlye where you live symbiotically with the bees and work to sustain them.Absolutely no one should be keeping bees in boxes on the ground for the purpose of abusing their instincts to extract from them a sweet syrup to put into their tea.#capitalism #sustainability #ecology #bees #pollinators #honey

@Radical_EgoCom Sure, it's simply that the top-left quadrant is as much of an unrealistic fantasy as the lower-right quadrant is. In reality, there's a simple question: do you have a society centered around control or consent? In a consensus-driven (anti-authoritarian) society, people will tend to take care of each other and their environment more effectively, i.e. left-wing outcomes. If you create a social system of hierarchical control, those at the top of the hierarchy will take care of their needs and the needs of those close to them, creating class division.

@aral Dunbar was full of shit. Neither mastodon nor bluesky are platforms which particularly encourage conversation, but bsky has more people and utilities to facilitate it than we do. Sharable custom feeds and quote posts are examples off the top of my head. It's also a centralized platform, and while that has it's disadvantages, it also solves the problem we have here where an instance gets blocked by everyone and the admins just create a new instance at a new domain. Bigoted trolls regularly engage in harassment of folks who's profile shows they fit in some marginalized category. Effective moderation of this is basically impossible and inherent to decentralized platforms. It's not something you or I might see as white men, but I've seen some shocking screenshots from trans and particularly black mastodon users.

@37712 why would you build a house in the desert anyway. Privatizing land is just a bid for exploitation.
