@tomjennings @vga256 You sound like you are describing Gemini in many ways. For my use cases, gopher is ideal (amateur radio and encryption are problematic). Unencrypted protocols also allow an entire universe of hardware to access information - a gopher client is less than 1000 lines of C.I also want to do Gemini over packet radio, still working through that.

@tomjennings I rip random pages out of library books and staple them together into new books, but this sounds like fun too!

@ChuckMcManis @rooster TTY is clearly "talking to you", but otherwise most of these are spot on. :)

@foone Is that because of all the dependencies required, or is it hard to get a GUI app to talk to the display manager outside the container? (or both, i bet it's both lol)

@Cat @tomjennings Lagrange runs beautifully on Android! It's a great Gemini and Gopher browser

@tomjennings @Cat Lagrange handles Gemini and gopher sites, just as an fyi, and also has a TUI mode if you crave a TTY experience (I haven't tried it yet, but I really should...). If on Linux, there's a Flatpak version available too for easy of install - that's what I use at present.

@foone I have no idea what you are up to, but my heart lept with joy seeing that screen. I probably played more RRT1 than any other game besides Ultima Online.

I was seriously thinking about the original MNT Reform laptop (not the newer model coming up, but the older one - I like the stepped case because it looks a bit like a Playstation2, and I adore the trackball)But HOLY CARP, I'm not dropping $2500 Canadian on one. I realize it's a niche (and limited, and flawed) machine, but...wow. I could probably buy 5 or 6 refurbs for that, if not more.

@tomjennings @vga256 2k of text is a lot faster than 20k over 300 baud packet radio 📻. We measure latency in seconds in that world :)I do agree, gopher is the nasty side of old tech we don't talk about - and is also where I think Gemini strikes a nice middle ground - small, but sane and in the clear spirit of gopher.

@tomjennings I use older surplus machines with secure boot disabled. It's not Linux on a Windows machine, but I understand (and fear) what you are saying.

@santi @ai6yr @tomjennings I want to split the difference - if my client had shown me a boost once before, don't show it to me over and over and over as people boost it.Bonus points if this state information is saved into my profile so it works across clients (desktop and mobile)

@doskel Use SLAAC, not DHCPv6... or do you mean it stops broadcasting RA's? SLAAC has gotta be the nicest feature in v6, imo, or right up there.Edit: also, if you like IPv6, check out Yggdrasil for your own IPv6 overlay network. It's super awesome; could totally replace Tailscale or Wireguard for VPN into your own network or network or networks.
