@alexandra I'd actually like some good instructions for writing assembly for embedding in C code.I wrote something a while back and had a very rough time dealing with all the register replacement syntax. Then when i asked for help, folks just said "don't write assembly, the compiler will do it better".

@alexandra @urusan extremely specific control over instruction timing FOR THE WIN If your most precise C-level sleep function might give you microsecond precision, and i need 100ns precision for a hardware protocol, assembly is what I have to use.But it would have been nice to be able to program a counter with the correct number of NOPs so that function could easily adapt to different clock speeds.

@Ninjatrappeur heh. I write GTK apps that i run on Sway. :)So, i switch between gnome on my work machine and Sway on my home machine every day, and somehow the muscle memory has finally stopped being in conflict.

@urusan one of my bikes. I've had it for ten years, but it was definitely manufactured in the 90's. However, over switched to a new bike and haven't ridden that one since the first year of the pandemic.And while i can come up with some other things, i have one pot, technically a pressure cooker that i don't use that way any more, that I've had since 2000.

Okay y'all.I much prefer native desktop apps. I prefer using them, i prefer developing in GTK, I prefer having mature, reasonable toolchains.But I'm also developing an app that actually needs to be cross platform. I have Mac users. Might even have a Windows user. Plus, it actually needs to talk to a server. There's not much meaningful it can do without that.So... Is web app what I'm stuck with? Are my passions carrying me to hell forever?

I have now made the choice that i will build client server apps for these things, but the clients will be native apps. If i don't have access to the tools to build the app for some platform, I'll hope that somebody else gets inspired to do so, or I won't build the app.I refuse to revisit this unless I somehow get a little team of developers who can tolerate the JS build tools, or I can build a Wasm UI in rust.

@twizzay @benjaminhollon i have a pine watch. It's nice to have the current time and a step counter on my wrist.I've of my friends really likes the fitness push that their apple watch gives. Like, apple got something right in a UI to motivate them. Or it's just needing to burn off the energy from being on T for the first time.

What tools would you use if you were wanting a dashboard that would show the status of a few servers in the cloud and maybe a few servers around your house?I have three servers that need general logging in my cloud network, and one in my home network. And maybe I want to send some of my own personal laptop stats to it when the laptop is turned on.

What's a sex-positive term for an institution that is basically a brothel? All of the synonyms that I can find feel much more sex-negative, and I'm writing into a story an organization in a place that has no hint of sex shaming.
