Ughhhhhh last tweet about Bluesky I promise It's annoying how folks are like "Bluesky made a mistake making a platform for leftists organizers" when those leftists went to a capitalist platform that took a ton of VC money and has been openly billing themselves as a 'freedom of speech but not of reach!' platform since day oneWhy aren't they just making their own alternative??? Do they not see the problem with having to beg corporations for their fucking basic needs????

I'm not blaming them but there's a specific brand of Twitter leftist that doesn't actually organize and thinks that just making noise on social media will get them what they want. Or that begging those in power for what they want will work. What if, instead of funneling all that effort into getting Bluesky to do the bare minimum of apologizing, you just left?? And didn't come back???Let them be an example! Just leave!

OKAY SOMastodon already has full text search, it uses ElasticSearch, and everyone is opted-in by default because that makes sense. It is also dogshit and does not work. At all.So in the next version of Mastodon, on instances that already have full text search enabled, Mastodon is going to *remove all users’ content from the full text search index until they click a checkmark three clicks deep in settings*????How the fuck is this not a feature regression???? https://oliphant.social/@oliphant/110946415973866735

This literally is going to completely decimate what little content discovery there is on Mastodon. I am going to have EVEN MORE users complaining to me as an admin about full text search not working or being inconsistent. Now there are more things that can go wrong. Because now it’s not just that it isn’t indexed by ElasticSearch. It could be that this stupid fucking property isn’t federated properly. Or that it’s not enabled for a user.

I think what a lot of people interpret as flippancy about 9/11 amongst gen Z people is actually gen Z coming to a more nuanced (and correct) interpretation of the events that happened. There is a popular, default interpretation of the 9/11 events that scapegoats and ignores the US government quite literally directly causing the events that unfolded. When we say that 9/11 was an attack, the next obvious question is "by whom?" And most Americans think it was just an attack by terrorists.

This kind of interpretation ignores the quite literally decades of US-backed and funded terrorism that we did abroad. We literally funded the people that murdered the families of the terrorists who attacked us. We are the villain origin story of the terrorists lmao. And not enough people realize that.So many Americans just assume that there's this great evil 'other' out there that wants us dead because of 'our freedom' when the reality is more complicated. We are not the good guys lmao.

And saying this is not apologizing for terrorism because I think that ALL terrorism is bad. I think 9/11 was a travesty. But I also extend that to what we did decades ago in Afghanistan, or in Haiti, or in Nicaragua, or in Cuba, or in the tons of other countries that we installed dictators in that we taught how to torture people efficiently: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_involvement_in_regime_changeBecause the current interpretation of 9/11 ignores and excuses that behavior. It ignores the reality of the cause of 9/11.

The default US interpretation of 'never forget' forgets the fact that 9/11 was a direct and obvious consequence of the murder, pillaging, and terrorism the US military and the CIA have done abroad for decades. It is US apologia. And not only that, it provides a justification for the actions we did *after* the attack, where we went to Afghanistan and murdered more than 240,000 people, 74,000 of those being innocent civilians. https://watson.brown.edu/costsofwar/costs/human/civilians/afghan

And saying that is NOT discounting the lives that were lost on 9/11. It contextualizes them. It pins the blame on the real murderers, the real cause of that senseless travesty. It doesn't instead ignore them like the vast majority of Americans do.

Principles for building unstoppable open source software:- Optimize for cost: both development and hosting. - Build on top of a foundation with lots of flexibility. - Build with what people are familiar with. - Make it extensible: offer an open API, extension API, etc.

For web apps:- Build a static SPA with a backend api in Elixir or Rust. These will run on a toaster. - Use a simple frontend framework that offers a lot of flexibility. - Build a graphql API or an API with OpenAPI defs. - Turn CORS OFF on the API. Make it easy for people to build alternative frontends without a server.

@danwentzel Historically the wealthy have been the primary supporters of fascism. The week before Hitler gained power, Göring sent letters inviting Germany's top 25 industrialists to a secret meeting. At the meeting, Hitler said "private enterprise cannot be maintained in a democracy" and promised to eliminate trade unions. The industrialists were so enthusiastic, they went on to raise 3 million Reichsmarks to strengthen and confirm Nazi power. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Meeting_of_20_February_1933
