@timnitGebru Of course it won't ever die - it's a part of human nature. Like other negative and destructive parts of our nature, it requires continuous vigilance to tamp it down and mitigate the effects. It's wearying but also necessary.

@BrodieOnLinux Why go halfway? We should shitcan time zones entirely and all jurisdictions move to UTC. Failing that, we should remove the chunkiness from time zones and make local time continuously variable based on longitude (except near the poles).

I won't die on this hill, but I will risk stubbing my toe on it: both timezones and daylight saving time are the devil's work; UTC for the win. Once we get rid of those, do we really need to divide days up by hours, minutes and seconds? We've got fractional days to meet all our needs. That done... do 7-day weeks - or the concept of weeks at all - meet any actual needs? Day numbers for the win. We can vote on whether to start the year with day 0 or day 1, but the year starts on a solstice.

@nergal When an elephant stretches their trunk to grasp a proferred peanut, all three tons are implicated. That same trunk may pull down a tree later in the day.

@nergal We've entered the age where 100MB can count as "barely."When I was getting started in computing, I spent a lot of time wire-wrapping sockets for 4kbit RAM chips. It was the golden age - those who came before me spent as much time wire-wrapping sockets for 1kbit chips.

@nergal Back when I was wire-wrapping RAM sockets, the IBM-PC hadn't yet been introduced, so there was no MS-DOS much less any consumer GUIs. We already had the trackball, mouse, and CPM, which MS-DOS "borrowed" from.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wire_wrap

@todayilearned If USA had as many per capita as does Iceland, there would be 5000 free in USA.

@yisraeldov @malin Would that it were that simple - following the counsel of a fool is also foolish, and distinguishing the foolish from the wise itself requires wisdom.

@BrodieOnLinux A fun application would be xteenager(1), which when run would show the image of a GTO with a baseball-wielding teenager that would swoop across the screen to smash the mailbox. In the spirit of the venerable xroaches(1). But it's about 30 years too late.

@BrodieOnLinux I think of enshitification as being much more specific than that: it's the purposeful erosion of a service by a provider in pursuit of ever-larger revenue share. Something going to hell on its own or by some less purposeful mechanism is something else altogether.

@BrodieOnLinux Here ye go: this is literally the opposite of taking something of beauty and turning it to shit (see the section on the Mythbusters episode puncturing "can't polish a turd"). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dorodango
