@freemo The thing that caused me to wonder now was a shaving cream can, where I could test the pressure inside by deforming it with my fingers first.I also saw such a warning on camping gas bottles (some mixture of propane and butane), which did have a way of ensuring they're empty provided: there's a plastic shim you can push into the valve to permanently open it (so that you can vent the bottle after you used up the gas). In such cases I don't really see a reason not to amend it to say "don't puncture unless the shim has been inserted for a few minutes".

@freemo Sure, but if there's an open vent in the tank, and there is noticeable sound coming from the vent, then I'd assume that it's at atmospheric pressure and thus can be punctured without much risk (assuming nonsparking tooling and/or long duration venting upside down so that it's unlikely to flash). I wonder whether the warning is trying to warn me of some remainign risk that I don't see or whether it's (overly) simplified.

Sadly this means that unless one assumes good faith of the speaker, one can't really judge what they want to convey other than by looking at what effect it has, lest the estimate be ~easily manipulatable :(

@ZachWeinersmith Can you expand on what you mean by boring? When I was a preteen I could find random websites with lots of circuit diagrams for simple things someone found useful, Seaview fanfiction, and various very esoteric topics. My impression is that finding as satisfyingly in-depth descriptions, especially of niche topics, is now harder.

@foone With some more mirrors you could get all 3 distances to be closer to equal (getting them exactly equal is not that helpful given that even one side is not at a constant distance from the focal point, unless you arrange for some lens arrangement that has an effective focal point very far away).

@foone If you let the disk fall/slide into a slot shutter-side-first (and stop it there for a while, presumably with another servo) you could probably use the same camera for front and side.

@Suiseiseki I think you are right on limited consequences of a fire. I would expect though that an ignition source should be pretty easy to find in a car accident: the exhaust systems of all involved cars are likely got enough.
