Long ago, I was an angry young man who railed against all the injustices of the world, but now time has passed, I have matured and learned so much more about things, and now I am an angrier old man.

I wonder if there is data somewhere about the number of dead links. I would like to have data supporting my hunch that they represent a growing fraction of all the links out there. Sure feels that way, although I suspect with most web sites being dynamic, it's unquantifiable.Data is _not_ forever. May Shannon bless the the Internet Archive.

Looking for ideas. Apple offered me $500 for my old laptop, but when I sent it in they say, "Oh, a scratch. We'll give you $100." There's no way a perfectly functioning and upgraded M1 MacBook Air is worth only $100. So I got it back. Now I'm looking for a good home for it. I don't want money, I want it to have a good life. Two conditions:1. It has to help make the world a better place.2. I'm not shipping it, so the transfer has to be local to Sydney.

A nice talk by my ex-colleagues Eve Martin-Jones and Josie Anugerah about the misperceptions many have about dependency resolution. It's not nearly as simple a problem as the tool builders would have you believe.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-niBbN-ufYo&list=PLbzoR-pLrL6p2qBhq7OHXDzCTfIZuzCma&index=9

It is a fascinating field of study for me. Why some staggeringly complex tasks can be done at 120fps but it still takes me 30 seconds to render the login page at my bank.https://mastodon.social/@ZevEisenberg/112435500743889014

Smoky season has returned to Sydney, with "hazard reduction" burns casting a pall that settles into the windless bowl of the city. Soon it will get much worse, I'm sure—and I do hope the hazard truly is reduced—so I've finally set up air quality monitors inside and out. Modern life.<cynical political remark redacted>

My occasional reminder that I once used a ROM burner that, upon power-up, announced on its bright red LED display: "RELF-TEST PASSED".

@detreville Wow, he aged fast for man of 26, especially one who didn't play cards or dance. A hard life for a hard worker, I guess.

You say that but... We had a recurrent RP06 disk drive failure caused by smoke particles wedging under the head. The filters just weren't good enough. I think the famous "Winchester" drives made that problem go away by sitting much closer to the platter. Also helped: smoking bans at work.https://mastodon.social/@aka_pugs/112623049217851822

@aka_pugs @adrianco And then there was the day around 1990 I took out my 9 track backup tape from the 1970s to grab something there before the last 9 track drive in the lab went away, only to watch ferric dust fall off. It was all gone.Backups must be curated, a lesson that must be learned and relearned. For those who don't know, a (once ubiquitous) 9 track tape on a drive looks like this; nowadays they only show up in old movies.

USB-C is a fantastic "standard" if you are a cable manufacturer. My latest dance required trying three different cables, all unlabeled with anything other than manufacturer name, before my devices would talk to each other.I remember people were so excited that USB-C was going to make the vagaries of USB a thing of the past, but in my experience - today was not much of an outlier - it has only accentuated them while introducing new puzzles.
