@politicsbot - OK, I read their criteria and, unless I’m misunderstanding something, this is random and silly. Average *bowling* cost? Cost of running shoes? What do these scores even mean?

@clive - My wife gave me this one for my birthday a few years back (the Mets won the Series on my 10th birthday) and whenever I see it, I think about how ubiquitous these were the year that this one was bought (by whoever later put it on eBay).

@arstechnica - I wrote this exact same article for the Voice Of America in 2015; so either your sources are wrong, or my sources were.

@jennycohn - A number of Republican congressional candidates tried this same trick in the 2022 midterms. It was revealed about them the same way this was revealed. In other words, it didn’t work.

@todayilearned @nm The country ran an ad campaign in the US maybe 15 years ago where the announcer pronounced it that way. I wonder why they waited so long to change it.

@StillIRise1963 From the article it came from: “Current and former agents said Trump’s detail would coordinate their protection work with the Bureau of Prisons to ensure there was no conflict about duties or about how they would handle emergencies, as well as the former president’s routine movements in a prison — such as heading to exercise or meals. The Secret Service, they said, would maintain a bubble around Trump in any case, keeping him at a distance from other inmates.”

@Gaythia @mekkaokereke What’s a “star professor,” or an “academic celebrity”? I’ve never heard either of these terms (or of those individual) before.

@futurebird Oh you Youngs. Latchkey Kid is a term from WWII, for children whose mothers worked, while their fathers were away, fighting in the war. When the term was re-adopted in the 1980s, it was assumed by news editors that everyone in their audience remembered the term from the 1940s. That’s why you never heard it explained. Your grandmother knew what it meant.

@drmambobob I spent most of the 1980s working in the US Senate, and I honestly do not remember nuclear Armageddon being much of a topic at all.

@drmambobob This sound’s exactly like the sort of tone deaf thing a person who sees themselves as an “expert” says. Just because you talked about it in the circles you kept doesn’t mean that’s what the normal people were feeling at the time.

@drmambobob What I am saying is that among the people I worked with, who principally specialize in the fields of crime & justice, environmental stewardship, disability, rights, and urban planning, that subject did not present itself. Your arrogant dismissal as “politicians” of public servants working in these areas is not at all helpful.

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow -Nah. There was a BBC story the other day saying, isn’t it heartwarming that this man in Alabama would go to his local pharmacy and give the pharmacist $100 a month with instructions to use the money to buy pharmaceuticals for someone who couldn’t afford them. You’d think a *British* network would say, “Wait, there are people in America who can’t get drugs because they can’t afford them!? What century is this.” But nah.

@mekkaokereke @Unampho @thekernelinyellow The other thing I love about that story (the Washington Post told it too) is that all the people in his community who found out about it said he was an angel. If the government was paying for those peoples’ pharmaceuticals, you know their neighbors would say it was Socialism.
