@strypey @timnitGebru @DAIR So you are arguing against calling for a release of hostages?

@jwildeboer @ParadeGrotesque Amazon offers a lot of this, but it is very expensive. A season of a show can cost more than several months of a subscription.

@john The start/stop button on my car does mysterious things when I try to shut off the engine while the car is still in gear. You have to put it in park and then push the button a random number of times until the car seems like it is finally off, though things are still beeping so it's hard to be sure.

@GottaLaff Here's the Secession document from Nikki Haley's home state of South Carolina, where she was governor. The leaders of the state explained their decision to secede and they explicitly named SLAVERY as the central issue. This was the official explanation of the people who led the state to secede, at the time they seceded, in their own words. It was about SLAVERY.https://constitutioncenter.org/the-constitution/historic-document-library/detail/south-carolina-declaration-of-secession-1860

@GottaLaff Here is the Texas Declaration of Causes in which the State of Texas explains that the explicit reason for seceding from the USA and joining the Confederacy was SLAVERY. This has been public and available and known for over a century and a half. It is not even a debatable question--the people who seceded told us in their own words at the time that the cause was slavery.https://www.tsl.texas.gov/ref/abouttx/secession/2feb1861.html

@john This is surprising given that this standard could be beneficial both for intrusive advertising and for porn delivery, the two primary applications which drive technology innovations.

@futurebird And should those foundational classes use open source software? Should our schools teach every kid to install and use LibreOffice, so they can do the things they need for free, or should they teach Microsoft Office so they can work in the corporate world? It bugged me that my son's school taught Photoshop instead of Gimp, which every kid could use at home for free--but learning Photoshop is better for kids who might get a job using it.

@apropos @futurebird The argument here is that Trump wasn't calling for an end to democracy, just telling a group of antisemitic, extremist, religious zealots that they would be super happy with America after four more years of Trump.Trump apologists like this also told us that we were overreacting about Muslim bans and ending Roe and Trmup campaign foreign entanglements and using federal officers to attack protesters and Trump attempts to overturn the election and all that stuff happened.

@apropos @futurebird The group he was speaking to when he made the comments is antisemitic. Trump, also, is frequently antisemitic independent of that group and antisemitic comments he made there. You are defending antisemites, and seemingly happy that Trump promised a room full of extremist bigots that he would make all their dreams come true. And for the record, my fear of antisemitic Trump supporters is fully rational.

@apropos @futurebird You are in denial. You are defending a horrible man by arguing that the horrible things he said were slightly different than the plain interpretation of the words, but there is no other interpretation that isn't also horrible. He's horrible. And TPUSA is teeming with antisemites despite firing one. They're horrible. Defending them makes you horrible, too.Stop nitpicking on people just to harangue them and try to cow them into silence. And stop being horrible.

@futurebird Just make some estimates of the cost to round up millions of people, salaries of the agents, costs to detain them, and the sheer number of bus trips needed. The cost would be astronomical, and that's on top of the billions he also wants to spend on a wall. All that is without the economic cost of removing those workers. These are empty promises that appeal to racism instead of economics, and the racists don't care if it adds up.

@raf Singling out Israel and holding them to a different standard than everyone else is classic antisemitism. Everything about Israel has to be treated as if it is the worst ever, the most extreme crime imaginable, uniquely dangerous to the world. If someone said this about Iranian or Chinese or Korean or Russian people it would immediately (and correctly) be condemned as bigotry. But, as has been the case for centuries, it is perfectly acceptable to accuse Jews of collective guilt.

@futurebird In addition to being a rambling and incoherent response which didn't even remotely address the question asked, it is also a lie on top of another lie. There was no man of the year award and no subsequent press concession that they were wrong and he actually won this award. https://www.cnn.com/2024/09/19/politics/fact-check-donald-trump-fictional-stories/index.html

@futurebird This woman desperately wants to believe she is the victim of something--being taken advantage of by foreigners or being mistreated by a hotline employee. She is sadistically aching for somebody, somewhere to be punished for something no matter whether her life is materially affected in any way or not. She's like a frustrated toddler lashing out at anything within reach. A raging racist toddler with a cell phone, a job overseeing children, and voting rights.
