@bella I'm mostly still on there just for Jacob Geller's bonus content, I don't really like the interface and most of it is just media analysis video essays by channels I don't watch. I guess there are some good left type content creators on there (for example Philosophy Tube, Mia Mulder, Tom Nicholas), but there's not enough of them.

Thinking about how thoroughly hostile any sensible fediverse user is towards Meta taking up any sort of space in the fediverse, thinking about how to make the place less palatable to corporate interests, then realising that your home server is fediblocked by tons of other existing servers for complete nonsense reasons anway, and we'd probably never even get a chance to give Meta any shit before they froze us out.

All value reddit had outside of it's basic structure and scaling ability was provided by its userbase and its individual communities.If reddit alienates its users it has nothing.Conversely, anything looking to replace reddit probably doesn't have to be super technically impressive. The way so much tech knowledge is secreted away in Discord servers and subreddits is fundamentally disgusting to me because it mandates that I feign "participating in the community" in order to be able to get anything done.Fuck off. I (in 99% of cases) don't want to be your friend. I want to make things. Our relationship is purely professional. You're forcing me to waste both our times so you have someome to talk to online. JUST FUCKING WRITE IT DOWN(That said, hats off to the people who actually do maintain documentation alongside their community functions. You are doing the lord's work. This just makes me -perhaps irrationally - really mad because I once worked a job where the dev team refused to document anything and I had to figure out from scratch how their overcomplicated backend system worked for 4 solid months while also having to constantly solve client problems and then I quit due to stress)

This was a great video from People Make Games from over a year back now, but in one part of it he perfectly outlines why Meta/Facebook were so intent on getting in on the whole metaverse concept, to the extent that they renamed the company itself to reflect this.Meta wants to be the platform through which you do everything. As an organisation they are deeply envious of both the Android ecosystem and WeChat- Tencent's Chinese app that handles social media/messaging/payments/ and loads more stuff.Their play for the metaverse has mostly collapsed because it turns out that's not even really a feasible goal (see every single attempt at building a commercially viable "metaverse") but the overall desire still remains. If they can't control the supposedly impending metaverse, they'll take a different approach to inserting themselves into everything they can as an unwanted middleman. They make a fortune from harvesting personal data to sell to advertisers, but this isn't anything like the money they could be making if everybody was making those transactions *through* facebook. Scope Creep is a common problem in project management that can affect all types of projects, not just software.This includes projects of political activism. I wonder if this has ever been leveraged as a form of sabotage against political actors, to require them to waste time expanding into tangentially related activities and unfocus them from more meanginful goals? I'd be surprised if it hadn't. It's very easy to do.
