@neil @revkThere's a stronger moral argument than that, I think. What does the ad industry do if not buy and sell human attention? *Our* attention? That's the product being transacted, the thing companies pay big money for.But you can't sell something that doesn't belong to you! They're charging for something that’s *not theirs*, trading our attention without our consent. Now I've realised that, it's impossible to think of advertising as anything other than blatantly unethical to its core.

The person we burn in effigy on bonfires in November shouldn't be Guy Fawkes, it should be whoever came up with the idea of putting the clocks back.

I'm so tired of the discourse on #adblocking being framed as users vs. creators.Creators suffer from rampant unregulated advertising attached to their hard work. Seeing their labours being exploited to promote scams and enrich surveillance capitalists with no control or recourse. Seeing potential subscribers close the tab because their impression of the channel in those crucial first few seconds was some obnoxious ad.You think makers *want* this system? Hell no. We just want an income.

Creators, more than anyone, need to speak out against this false ‘us vs. them' narrative. It's a disingenuous ploy, like when Facebook said cross-app tracking was ‘good for small businesses’.I encourage anyone to adblock my stuff, and I know I'm not alone in that. Every creator has a part to play in promoting better security practices and fairer business models.I made this image to put into the credits of future videos. I release it into the public domain; feel free to use it in your own.

And if you're a YouTube channel owner who finds themselves on the other side of this argument, arguing against those who use ad blockers, I respect that. But I encourage you to consider whether your position will serve your long-term interests if YouTube continues along the trajectory it's been following over the last few years.

Stumbled across this protest design I made in 2012. This hit the top of r/unitedkingdom the day it was posted (though I didn't have the guts to be the one to post it).The heavy-handed enforcement of trademarks and branding in London (e.g. forcing businesses to change their names, stopping restaurants serving chips because McD's had exclusive rights to sell french fries near the games) had royally pissed me off.Somehow I channeled that anger into this image in the space of about 10 minutes.

What 'um, actually…’ can't you resist crowbarring into any conversation that mentions a certain topic, even though you know it's pedantic and potentially also annoying?Mine's 'there's no such thing as a Nobel Prize in Economics’. Can't help it, sorry.

I never got round to posting on my Cohost account (liked the site and the ethos, just didn't build the habit) but there’s a lot of good retro and game history writing on there that's going to disappear (or at best, become difficult to discover in the Wayback Machine). Sad news.

Got nothing personal against Mark Hamill; he seems alright. But by nature, big celebs tend to suck the oxygen out of a social network, and shift the mode from conversation to consumption.I don't think it's a coincidence that peak Twitter had no big names (except Stephen Fry, and in the beginning he used it like any other user).Bluesky seems to be speedrunning years of Twitter history in a few days. I'm using both, but I'm putting most of my chips here.

When a tiny number of users get an outsized amount of attention, and therefore have a high degree of influence on the discussion topics of the day, that's not a healthy network. On Fedi, everybody's a nobody... and I mean that as an absolute positive. There are no blue ticks, no divide between 'famous' and 'everyone else’. Numbers may vary, but we're all peers, all the way up to Eugen. All discussion is between equals, and that makes this place unique.

I miss the term 'desktop publishing’. And also the practice of using every font on the system in a one-page newsletter.

According to several of her friends on Bluesky, legendary game programmer Rebecca Heineman passed away in the last few hours. Rest in peace, @burgerbecky.
