@lain being a criminal and doing things that are unethical are two separate things. Decentralization, P2P, tor, etc. hedges our bets against governments respecting human rights by baking inalienable rights into our technologies.

Holy fuck, I had a pretty grim forecast of the future for this, but this ruling just shattered that: you can now LEGALLY repair and modify your phones, voice assistants, smart home devices, home appliances, cars and tractors! https://ifixit.org/blog/11951/1201-copyright-final-rule/

I've seen so many people's day-to-day wasted on constantly context switching and toiling away on fake work -- work that isn't yielding value or yielding relatively low value compared to other tasks on their plate.Time management is a lie. We all spend time at a constant rate (well, relatively šŸ˜‰). How you invest that time is what matters. Invest time and money into things that yield compounding returns. Automation, living closer to work, minimizing distractions, leadership, etc.

Anyone know when the 1 per customer restriction for Pi Zero W is going to be lifted? I'm considering using them around the house for a smarthome project, but need several dozen.

@kelbot I was just kicking myself over this! I was in STL last week and didn’t stop by micro center!

Quora is an internet scale Library of Alexandria that is destined to take all of it's knowledge to the grave when it burns.https://waxy.org/2018/12/why-you-should-never-ever-use-quora/

After thinking a lot about the LUKS nuke patch, I’m a lot less excited about it. I encrypt my data because I want to know (and control) when that data is accessed. My password forces consensual access. Nothing I have is worth the ramnifications of providing a state actor a password that nukes data (not to mention they probably have a backup at this point anyways), nor is it worth someone taking a rubber hose approach to data access not believing that I no longer have access to the data.

The year is 2019 and I can’t buy a good majority of consumer technology because we lack privacy legislation and consumer protections. Example: it’s absurd that my TV came with spyware that can’t be turned off or avoided; I had to stop it from phoning home at the network level. It also came with an arbitration clause and a clause waiving the right to a class action lawsuit.

@crlf Yeah, the TV is essentially bricked until you agree to the ToS of the "Smart TV" software (Roku). You can't even use the HDMI inputs until you agree.

@mydogisahusky I use them as a screen for HDMI inputs that go into a RaspberryPi. It's hard to find a 55' 4K HDMI monitor for $350.

@rtwx @Matter @grainloom Yup! In this case, the entire machine was essentially bricked until I agreeded to the ToS. Couldn't even use the HDMI inputs.

@paco @rtwx @Matter @grainloom market segmentation (and a few other factors) has made computer monitors incredibly expensive. It's hard to find a 55' 4k computer monitor for $350.

Freedom respecting software is about the right to run, study, change, and redistribute software. I feel that the Open Source community is focused on the first point, the right to run, but the others are IMO more important. The right to study gives humanity the ability to learn and grow together. The right to change allows users to customize software to their needs. The right to redistribute allows you to share the cool new stuff you build with your friends.

I feel that focusing only on the right to run actually _discourages_ open source contributions by placing the maintenance burden at the feet of the project maintainers. Without a community that values the other rights, there is a high cost to a project owner when open sourcing. It's often easier to keep software closed source than to deal with the maintenance burden of giving everyone the right to run without anyone else having the desire to study and change.

@mangeurdenuage I disagree in the sense that the "right to run" isn't intrinsic to freedom respecting software. Buying a copy of Microsoft Word will give you the "right to run."Most of the value of freedom respecting software comes from the ability to study, change, and share. In fact, you could study/change/share _without_ a license to run the software!

@kelbot I use tablet mode on my Libreboot X200T every day to take notes during meetings šŸ˜„ xournald is awesome for this. Xournald also can load a pdf background, so I use it for marking up contracts and stuffs.
