I either need to go way back-to-basis with Linux or switch to something else. All the cleverness that has been added in the last decade or so bites me in the ass daily, and does little to no good (maybe wifi is slightly easier to configure).

This started as a fediverse post but then my brain exploded and it turned into a fully-formed project/proposal 🤣Anyway, one more step toward purging artificial ingredients from your mind:https://jasongullickson.com/the-human-web.html#thw

@Linux_in_a_Bit thanks! I'm hoping to make this as little to do with programming as possible 😁 Since there's some interest I'm going to take some time over the weekend to figure out a few details and post more specific requests for help to the hashtag #thw

I don't know why it took me this long to realize it, but if you're implementing a VM there's no reason it has to emulate or otherwise behave like it's running on real hardware...

Five hours ago I started swapping-out a piece of dryer duct figuring it would take an hour. Then I disassembled the entire run, cleaned out each section of pipe and replaced the external flapper thing. I just finished cleaning up and now I need to clean my filthy self up.This is why I don’t do estimates. In my experience it is impossible to estimate what it will take to do a job right. I could have finished swapping the part in the time I guessed, but once I had it open, it was a disaster in their and I would just be doing the work later, starting over from scratch and wasting a lot of time and electricity in the meantime. This is why it bothers me to do things the wrong way. It’s always worse across all vectors over time, and you get the added bonus of kicking yourself because you knew better in the first place.

Twice now I’ve experienced the fallout of bugs in my coworkers code and when I looked into it the bug was introduced by Copilot.Think about that for a second.I’m trying to accept that everyone I talk to at work about these systems (I won’t dignify them by using the term ā€œintelligenceā€) ignores my warnings and treats me like a fool for refusing to use them, but now I have to clean up the mess others make by trusting these things. This isn’t sustainable.

Two things I’ve learned over the last week about GPT’s most vocal advocates:1. They know very little about artificial intelligence 2. The know very little about natural intelligence

The graduating seniors clearly do not appreciate the potential of this array of high-voltage power supplies and evaporative cooling compressors…

The pager software we use for on-call now doesn’t recognize that I have their app installed on my phone, so it won’t push notifications when I get paged. This is just the latest in a continual stream of ways that my phone and the software conspire to make me miss pages (os updates changing DND settings, app updates requiring acknowledgement before they will work, etc.), and as a result I spend a week paranoid and constantly checking to make sure I didn’t miss a page.So I’m thinking about getting a cheap dumb phone and setting the pager software to send a text to this phone. I’ll block all other numbers and leave it turned-off when I’m not on call, so that if it ever goes off, I’ll know for sure that there’s an actual emergency. If only there were a small, simple and reliable piece of hardware that would beep and/or vibrate only when you were needed for an actual emergency… šŸ¤”šŸ¤”šŸ¤”

@piggo I dig itI spent the day installing some fenders I paid too much for on my Super73 (which I probably paid too much for). Spent hours cleaning it, first time since I bought it a few years ago, but it was a nice way to spend the day outside.

You know what worked really well for paging people for emergencies?Pagers. My last pager always beeped when I was paged. It ran on a single AA battery for about six months and would throw a low battery warning for about two weeks before it actually died.It beeped and it buzzed, always. Now I get paged by an app on my phone. If my phone battery is dead (lasts about 24 hours), I miss a page. If the app stops running in the background with no warning, I miss a page. If the is gets updated and screws up my settings, I miss a page. If some stupid DND setting gets engaged, I miss a page. If I’m somewhere with a less than perfect signal, I miss a page. You get the idea. It’s really frustrating to me that the assumption that there should be just one thing that does everything has led to the elimination of things that did their one job perfectly and we’re left with something that does everything poorly.Maybe this is find for consumer devices, but it’s insufficient for professionals.
