The #mastodon #contentmederation policies and questions are a lot more consequential than I first thought. -The tasks of moderation are too much for nearly anyone to take on without PTSD. -Defederating confuses users who won’t understand why things don’t show up. @raynor -Telling marginalized groups to go spin up their own instance “for safety” is telling them to self-segregate.-If Mastodon is to become the new town square than the usability issues matter greatly: a lot (most of?) us here are in tech. @raynor and god help anyone trying to post from the apps. I tried 3 different apps to get this thread to post. One did tell me I was over the character limit — it just threw an error when I tried to post. The second wouldn’t let me paste (!) properly what I already wrote. Finally, the third let me copy and paste, and tell me how many characters I had left. This thread must have took 15 minutes +/- to write.

@raynor and that doesn’t count the 4th app I originally found the post on. I copied the link from that post because no quote tweets, then changed to a different app to write this thread. I don’t need technical solutions: the point is what the OP said — #mastodon is attracting overwhelming white tech people. You have to be techie to understand it, and techies are overwhelmingly white in the US.

@raynor The one mitigating factor I saw another PoC post is how much the US is racially focused. The non-US and Eurocentric nationalities will likely have different viewpoints.

@raynor Anyway, I’ve posted too much about racism that I don’t fully understand which was also a core point of the OP. It was a long winded way of saying: she/he was right and I was wrong: the issues are way more important and complex than I thought even a few days ago.
