@wjmaggos This is what https://fediverser.io is doing for Reddit. :)My idea though would be to aggregate the data from closed networks in the client, and use AcitivityPub only when the user wants to comment/share/repost.

@mike @jejord @AileenLalor @miaq @marci Can one follow/post to a #Lemmy community from flipboard? Now with football and basketball seasons soon starting in the US, being able to integrate flipboard with @nfl and @nba would be fantastic!

@mike @jejord @AileenLalor @miaq @marci If following Lemmy communities is a possibility from flipboard, then please take a look at https://fediverser.network/communities. This is part of my https://fediverser.io project which aims to make migration from Reddit to the Fediverse more seamless. It lets people automatically discover all the Lemmy communities that correspond to their favorite subreddits.

One of the things that bug me about ActivityPub is that actor ids must be dereferenceable. IOW, you can only fully "own" your identity if you have control over the domain name. So, here is an insane idea: what if we could use https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_number_mapping to give one valid domain name for every active phone number, which can then be used by the number owner to create ENS-style records? This would let everyone to set up, e.g, their AP id based on their phone number.

Yeah, no one really "owns" their phone number, but in most cases the same could be said about domain names: they are resources that are controlled by highly regulated entities and that need to be able to operate globally.

How much would you be willing to invest in a Fediverse project that was set out to compete with Threads and Bluesky?"Success" here would mean that this project has at least 50 million active users around the world. Please boost for reach

@cwebber @doktorzjivago @eloquence Even the Bluesky lead developers do not know how they are going to dig out of their own hole without becoming something resembling AP: https://mastodon.communick.com/@raphael/113796033637861505

@sun @silverpill What programming language are you using? Pretty much any RDF library can parse JSON-LD.

@silverpill @licho @helge > JSON-LD processing doesn't seem to solve any problem developers face in the real worldTo me, it's the opposite. Without JSON-LD, my application needs to have a bunch of parsing/serializing code in order to talk with everyone else. With JSON-LD, we could just rely on any RDF library and get the data structures that we need right away.By avoiding JSON-LD, you end up dealing with *more* complexity, not less.

@mikedev Ok, I can only see the link (https://codeberg.org/fortified/forte) if I visit your page. For some reason Mastodon did not put the link in the message.

@mikedev > so you can switch to an alternate server at any time.Does this mean that the user keys are the same, or just that the content is replicated between the different actors?

There is something *deeply* broken with Fedi culture when the admin of the third largest Mastodon instance needs to run a panhandle in order to make rent. https://mstdn.social/@stux/114224207456290061

@silverpill > This is more than minimum Ethereum node requirementsOh, come on. Ethereum's base layer handles less than 30 transactions per second. If this was unbounded of course it would require more hardware as well...

@silverpill With that said, I wonder why they can't build a relay based on gossip protocols to make it scale like a torrent swarm?

@stux If you are going to ask for money every month, have you considered flipping the script?Turn the server into a subscription-only system, but make it so that each paying subscriber gets to invite N people (where 3 <= N <= 10)?

@wjmaggos @ntnsndr @evan @mondoweiss Yes, let's please get more independent media on the Fedi and getting them to own their online presence. If you need any technical support for setting up your own instance, I'd be glad to help.

@silverpill @steve > Why would I send an expanded toot: URIBecause you might be using a different namespace which is conflict with the one from mastodon, so the extended form is needed to remove ambiguity?

@silverpill @steve JSON-LD is just one different way to serialize RDF data. Throwing JSON-LD away means throwing away all the power, benefits and flexibility that RDF can bring and in exchange gives us what? Another series of ad-hoc of data exchange formats? Why not lean in into the standard which is in development for 25+ years?

@silverpill @steve > There is no such thing as "namespace" in JSONRight, so what is your suggestion? To force all application developers to conform to one unique schema, or to come up with an ad-hoc, bug ridden re-implementation of namespaces on top of plain JSON?
