@louis Wow, that's quite a story and it sounds like you are interacting with some people who aren't entirely acting in good faith. As an emacs.ch user I appreciate both your significant effort and the transparency. I hope it comes to a quick conclusion.

@louis No crashes here on my M1 MBP, but lots of little glitches. No problems with external displays or Safari, touch wood.

Thanks to @clive I came across this article about the fastest human-made object, which picks up more speed as it orbits the sun, and is projected to reach 430,000 mph next year. Fast!https://mashable.com/article/nasa-parker-solar-probe-speed

… and I wondered "what is that in terms of percentage of C”? PCalc came to the rescue with a user-defined conversion. The answer: 0.06 %CThanks @jamesthomson for a great tool, I'm trying to use it more often.

Predictions for the launch of the Apple Vision Pro, now confirmed for Feb 2:The mainstream press will go on about how ‘expensive’ it is. Most likely this will be complete nonsense as there will be no direct competitor available at any price.A vocal minority of the tech press will react against the PR blitz and declare it outdated or lacking in some way. Back in the day, Slashdot issued a hilariously wrong proclamation on the then-new iPod: “No wireless, less space than a nomad, lame.” Expect history to repeat itself here. The device itself will be revolutionary but flawed, and almost certainly intentionally limited in many ways.Probably I won't be buying one. Not yet, anyway.(Happy to be wrong about any/all of these!)

It is difficult to make predictions, especially those about the future.(Old Danish proverb, apparently)https://quoteinvestigator.com/2013/10/20/no-predict/

@futurebird Heather Cox Richardson's Democracy Awakening describes in detail the origins of the usage of "socialist" to describe progressive causes. I was quite surprised to find that it dates back to post-Civil War times, when it was applied to groups promoting Black voting rights.

@evoterra @futurebird Complete agreement. I’m also re-reading the series with the intention to recapture these books from being misappropriated by Musk and lackeys. The Culture books are so good! And they totally understand and acknowledge the limitations of the utopia being posited. In the first book Consider Phlebas, the protagonist is someone who hates the Culture. To me this is the real strength of the books, the exploration of a genuinely attractive (to my eyes at least) progressive techno utopia but still with flaws and problems. Makes for compelling reading!
