Looks like my efforts to get the makerspace to move away from GitHub to our own hosted forgejo instance. But we still have one small issue left before we push my to all the members. How the fuck is it supposed to be pronounced? Is it forge yo! Or forge Joe? Software developers are second only to the British people when it comes to not being allowed to name things. At least it's not codey McCodeface...

Just imagine. If all the money that's been poured into the sparkling autocarrot industry, had instead been poured into education, and feeding people. We could have solved world hunger. We could have dramatically improved education across the whole planet. Instead? We're burning the planet down and using all the water cos some people are too lazy to write their own emails. FFS.

@backupbear working in IT support, a colleague comes to me with a problem with their laptop."Have you tried turning it off?" I ask."Yes, and back on again" they reply "That isn't what I asked" Took them far too long to understand.

MS is having DNS issues. So the Dutch railways are having issues. Critical national infrastructure should not be on cloud systems owned by foreign companies. This is resiliency 101.

Fediverse mask geeks. I'm wearing a 3m 7502 half face respirator. I have a 6055 A2 filter, with a 5935 P3 filter clipped on top. I've generally been happy with it. But today, when using an angle grinder. I could smell the angle grinder, even tho I was wearing the mask.Is this a case of:A) badly fitted mask?B) wrong filterC) filter life exceeded. The P3 filter in the outside is grey, suggesting it is catching something. (It was previously more black).

@tomjennings read the original toot. It has a P3 filter for particles. And an A2 filter for organic solvents.

Last week I upgraded my NS pass to one where all off peak travel is free. This has resulted in me using trains a lot more. It's like the Jevons paradox, but on rails. Definitely getting value out of this.

So far I've seen emails indicating black Friday has moved from being a single day to black weekend, then black week, and now one company has emailed me about their black month sale. At the rate this progresses we're soon gonna have a black year...

Reminder, if your digital life is stored in a cloud and you don't have a backup that you fully control, then it's very possible to lose all of it, in an instant, and with no recourse. Do *NOT* trust the cloud. For anything. Always maintain your own backups.https://cloudisland.nz/@parisba/115710491106723110

In order for public transport to be a viable alternative to driving. It needs to work even when it snows. Yes it's expensive to make infrastructure resilient but it's also really expensive not to. If NS trains don't run, society at a large loses out. That doesn't show on the NS balance sheet. When you take that into account, the economics of making the infrastructure more resilient change. Substantially.

Hmm. Of the 6 coffee machines at the Leiden Centraal AH Togos. Only one dispenses hot chocolate. And that machine is on the west side. Nothing on the east side. The space where hot chocolate used to be on the machine has been taken by double strength cappuccino. Not impressed.

In the Mastodon app when you click on a profile, you get "posts" "posts & replies" and "media". What it really needs is a 4th one, which is posts without boosts. Boosts are critical to the fediverse working (one of the reasons I boost a lot). But if you're looking for something a user wrote, finding it among the boosts can be a pain.

A couple of weeks ago, I was sat on the sofa when the ceiling lights came on. I don't use these lights very often. Having come on, they then cycled through all the colours. This is alarming. The lights are IKEA Tradfri bulbs, and I have a Tradfri gateway so I can control the lights via the app. My immediate concern was maybe someone had compromised my network and was experimenting with the API the gateway exposes. I started to do some debugging and network analysis. Today I discovered...1/n

... The cause. The last 5 years I've worked for a security company. I'm known for being paranoid about network security. Having my home network compromised like this would be bad. What else would they have access to ? Turns out, this was not a security compromise. This was a poor interaction between old technology, and new.The old technology? An IBM Personal Computer AT built sometime between 1984 and 1989, and the IKEA Tradfri control box. What is this poor interaction? 2/n

Turns out the size of the IKEA Tradfri control unit is just slightly higher than the gap under the front of an IBM AT. If you push the front of the Tradfri unit, say, cos you lean against it without realising it. Then the Tradfri box slides under the AT, which presses the button on the face of the Tradfri, which turns the lights on, and starts cycling through the colours. It wasn't some malicious hacker playing with my lights. It was just the Tradfri box being squeezed under a 40 yr old PC.3/3
