Quillette's verdict, before reaching the paywall...> A Story Spikedhttps://quillette.com/2026/01/02/a-story-spiked-60-minutes-bari-weiss/> Bari Weiss’s eleventh-hour cancellation of a 60 Minutes exposé on migrants imprisoned in El Salvador raises troubling questions about editorial independence at CBS News....> Even so, the defences of Weiss on the 60 Minutes story miss the mark. A close look at the timeline and substance of her decision suggests that the segment was spiked without a valid journalistic reason—and, very likely, to avoid angering Donald Trump.

Neanderthals are Homo sapienshttps://whyevolutionistrue.com/2026/01/04/neanderthals-are-homo-sapiens/> For a long time I’ve maintained that Neanderthals, which most anthropologists seem to think are a species different from Homo sapiens, in fact constituted a population that was H. sapiens. That, at least, is a reasonable conclusion if you use the Biological Species Concept, which defines populations as members of the same species if, when they meet under natural conditions in nature, can interbreed and produce fertile offspring. And we know that’s true of  Neanderthals and “modern” H. sapiens, because we carry some Neanderthal genes (I have some), and that means the two groups hybridized and that the hybrids backcrossed to our ancestors—and were fertile.

Ghent University rector Petra De Sutter uses fabricated quotes in speech, AI gets blame | VRT NWS: newshttps://www.vrt.be/vrtnws/en/2026/01/08/ghent-university-rector-petra-de-sutter-uses-fabricated-quotes-i/> De Sutter, who for the Green Party earlier served as Europe's first trans cabinet minister in PM De Croo's federal government, spoke at Ghent University on 19 September 2025 at the start of the academic year. She quoted philosopher Hans Jonas and psychologist Paul Verhaeghe, among others. She also attributed the statement ‘Dogma is the enemy of progress’ to Albert Einstein. Apache's investigation shows that the three quotes used are fabricated. They appear to be hallucinations of an AI tool.

Would be nice if public libraries could facilitate meetups of people who borrow the same books because I never come across local people with similar reading interests. I know they exist because they reserve my copies

SOTA On Bay Area House Partyhttps://www.astralcodexten.com/p/sota-on-bay-area-house-partyQUOTEA man in an OpenAI t-shirt introduces himself as Andreas, and raises his hand bashfully; he hasn’t joined the trend either. “Yeah,” you say. “I guess it would be awkward to use Claude at OpenAI.”“Nah,” he says, “The only reason I don’t use it is because I’m not a coder. I work on the Arson & Burglary team.”“I didn’t know OpenAI had an Arson & Burglary Team.”“It’s pretty new. In June, a court ruled that adding books to AI training data only counts as fair use if you destroy the original copy. But sometimes this is tough. If you’re going to use the AI for law, you have to have the Constitution in there. But the original copy is heavily guarded in the National Archives. That’s where we come in. We slip in, destroy it, and slip out before the guards are any the wiser.”“I don’t think that’s what they meant by ‘destroy the original - ’”“Our big problem is the Bible. It would be hard enough to get the Dead Sea Scrolls; Israeli security is no laughing matter. But our lawyer says we have to destroy the original original. What even is that? Altman is pushing for us to find the Ark of the Covenant, but you can bet he’s not the one who’s going to have to open it afterwards.”Lucy shrugs. “Why don’t you just use Claude Code?” she asks, and everyone in the conversation nods along.

The Dilbert Afterlifehttps://www.astralcodexten.com/p/the-dilbert-afterlife> For Adams, God took a more creative and – dare I say, crueler – route. He created him only-slightly-above-average at everything except for a world-historical, Mozart-tier, absolutely Leonardo-level skill at making silly comics about hating work....> Adams and Elon Musk occasionally talked about each other - usually to defend one another against media criticism of their respective racist rants - but I don’t know if they ever met. I wonder what it would have been like if they did. I imagine them coming together at some Bay Area house party on copious amounts of LSD or MDMA. One, the world’s greatest comic writer, who more than anything else wanted to succeed in business. The other, the world’s greatest businessman, who more than anything else wanted people to think that he’s funny. Scott Adams couldn’t stop frittering his talent and fortune on doomed attempts to be taken seriously. But someday Elon Musk will buy America for $100 trillion, tell the UN that he’s renaming it “the United States of 420-69”, and the assembled ambassadors will be as silent as the grave. Are there psychic gains from trade to be had between two such people?
