What's your preferred Mastodon client these days? (for iOS)

I just got my first outright hate speech reply on Mastodon. That was quick! The instance appears to be a hotbed for the same. I know a virtue of the fediverse is its agility at cutting out the cancer, but I'm fuzzy on what I'm supposed to do to help that happen. I started by blocking the asshole. What next?

Unpopular opinion:I don't see how one can be a stalwart defender of Fair Use by the Internet Archive, Google Books, and even internet search itself while simultaneously arguing that ChatGPT's use of widely published text and images as training data constitutes "theft".Is there some Fair Use test that ChatGPT fails but the others pass?

How did I miss this story? The @TexasObserver nearly shut down this spring after almost 70 years in business, but fans on Mastodon (!) were instrumental in saving it.https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Texas_Observer

@chrisg Thanks. That helps. It doesn't quite address one of my questions: could the proposed technology be yet another tool for totalitarian states to control access to information? If so, it seems to me that the fate of adblockers is a tiny concern in comparison and critics are ignoring bigger issues. But maybe there are reasons why this proposal is immune to state actors, dunno.

@stoneymonster @flockofnazguls We need an actual IP attorney to weigh in, but you can certainly trademark existing words - consider "Apple". So it wouldn't surprise me if you can in fact trademark an existing Unicode character.Trademark doesn't prevent people from using your mark, it just prevents them from using it to offer competing goods or services in the same industry or market. Which is why my local fruit stand can still sell "apples".

@inquiline The false equation "criticizing a country equals criticizing its people" is a standard authoritarian trick. It's particularly galling when people from my country (the US) fall for this trick, since so many evils have been committed in our name. Opposing those evils doesn't mean that we "hate America", if anything it means the opposite.

@staringatclouds @ParadeGrotesque @RickiTarr Causality loops that have no solution to the chicken/egg problem are one of the lovely mindbonks you can have with time travel stories. But best when they foreground the paradox and don't just leave it seeming like an odd loose end. Here's what I didn't get in Bodies: didn't they say the portal would send one copy to the past and one to the future? Where are the future ones?

@michaelgemar @futurebird That was written when it meant sort of a frantic pixelated gray, then for a time readers might have thought it meant an unnatural bright blue, and now they might assume it means black.

@foone @futurebird I agree in principle, although as a vintage 20th-century programmer I don't know what half this stuff is.But I'll tell you what I miss on phones and other locked-in devices: a shell prompt and full filesystem access.
