The #Gnome HIG is actively watering down what once was a desktop environment made exclusively for pixel precise pointing devices (a.k.a. the mouse) to the least common denominator (a.k.a. fat fingers). Who are they designing for? Tablet users? Not professional *nix workstation users doing real work, it seems. #LinuxUsability

I beg to differ: A desktop environment should be made exclusively for the desktop. With pixel precise click targets. And double click to open things. Like it has been since the early 80s. If I wanted iOS, I'd not use a desktop environment.

@popey Well. One can't please everybody all the time. Something can either be optimized for "fat fingers" or for "pixel-precise pointing devices", but not for both. There is a reason why the Mac is not the iPad. And why Windows doesn't look like this anymore.

@popey It's called a "desktop environment", not a "tablet environment". Yet it cripples or does away with one desktop-y thing (icons on the desktop, double clicking, proper menus,...) after the other.

#softwareminimalism at its best:gemini://, gemtext, and gempub are HTML, WWW and EPUB "made great again" by using simplified Markdown rather than bloated HTML + whatever. To get started, download a browser (e.g., https://kristall.random-projects.net/) and go to a gemini site (e.g., gemini://geminiprotocol.net)

@louis Isn't it a shame what became of #Mozilla, with them (ab?)using donation money for almost everything BUT #Firefox development... https://lunduke.locals.com/post/4387539/firefox-money-investigating-the-bizarre-finances-of-mozilla

@olmitch Is "text/gemini" an official MIME type yet? it should go into https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xdg/shared-mime-info if it isn't there yet.

@olmitch Right now focusing on rewriting the Filer from scratch (the previous one started as a fork from PCManFm-Qt, but contained lots of Gnome-ish code). It's been a lot of fun so far, and making progress... https://github.com/probonopd/Filer/#filer--

@Linux_Is_Best The main issue with Wayland is that there is not one implementation that everyone uses, and thus, the bugs and issues are multiplied with every desktop environment that uses Wayland. There are many reasons why Xorg should not, and cannot, be abandoned anytime soon. https://gist.github.com/probonopd/9feb7c20257af5dd915e3a9f2d1f2277

Really wish there were more community members like @Conan_Kudo who care about the greater "Desktop Linux" as a whole, not just about one particular distribution. And actually do things on a volunteer basis. Appreciate his work bridging communities, e.g., his work to bring Snap to Fedora. Sounds like an uphill battle though?

Regarding #Wayland, @Conan_Kudo nails it with "total protocol breakage and everything being completely different". And interesting to hear that @BrodieOnLinux is not using #Wayland due to "issues". "There are issues with Nvidia, absolutely. There are issues with window-manager-y things." So basically we all agree!

@Conan_Kudo maybe X11 isn't great but I'd say Wayland will be "there" once @BrodieOnLinux can use it for his video production, I can use it with, e.g., GNUstep on Nvidia, etc. - all things we can do with X11 today. Also, for it to be "there" all existing X11 applications would need to be ported over or rewritten; given 40+ years of investment into X11 this is a monumental task indeed, which gets offloaded to people outside of the Wayland project.

Received my #Raspberry Pi 5 today, had to try #helloDesktop on it immediately. Next step: Get this to run on #FreeBSD. Eventually: Shall we try to get the full #helloSystem going there...?

Using #Raspberry Pi OS (#Debian based) the RPi 5 seems to be running nicely and seems suitable for a small desktop system, including watching streaming videos in the browser in 1080p. Promising!

Experimental #helloSystem ISO based on #FreeBSD 14.0-RELEASE is available for testing at https://github.com/helloSystem/ISO/releases/tag/experimental-14.0. Known issue: No compositor (e.g., no drop shadows behind windows) on (some? all?) #nvidia GPUs. Reason so far unknown.

@thomasadam Agree that something needs to done about it. But in case future GPUs won't be supported in Xorg, wouldn't this approach be futile? What do you think about an alternative approach, namely bringing to Wayland those features that the Wayland folks have been denying so far? Is that idea even crazier? https://github.com/probonopd/wayland-x11-compat-protocols/

Did you know that the #XLibre #X11 server is now built on 7 different operating system environments including #mingw, #macOS, #FreeBSD, #DragonflyBSD, and #NetBSD? Thanks @XLibreDev. This is what "actively maintained" looks to me.

Slowly people seem to realize that #Wayland and #Rust are not the "future", but (carefully modernized) #X11 and #C are. Yay for projects that carefully bridge the past to the future with feasible migration paths, like Phoenix and XLibre. https://linuxiac.com/phoenix-emerges-as-a-modern-x-server-written-from-scratch-in-zig/

@katzenmann That's exactly my point - the "whole Linux community doing Wayland" was never true to begin with. It was Red Hat pushing it like crazy and KDE unfortunately following suit.
