It's pretty well established that the vikings settled in what is now maritime Canada, but some people found some runes and believe that Ragnar rocked all the way up to Oklahoma!https://www.bbc.com/travel/article/20221030-the-mysterious-viking-runes-found-in-a-landlocked-us-state

A monk spoke to Joshu, "I have just entered the monastery: please give me some guidance."Joshu asked, "Have you had breakfast yet?"The monk answered, "Yes, I have eaten."Joshu replied, "Then go wash your bowl."

@entreprecariat It's like the dream of "tactical media" comes to fruition 20 years too late.

In lieu of an introduction, here's a quote from the glossary of Russel Hoban's very strange, wonderful book _Riddley Walker_. The novel is written in a degraded, post-apocalyptic, largely phonetic yet poetic English. In later editions, the author added a glossary to explain some of the invented names, words and phrases. I stole my current display name from this book. This is what the writer says:___wud: Means wood as in forest; also 'would,' intention, volition or desire. The hart of the wud is where Eusa saw the stag who was the hart of the wud. The heart of the would is also the essence of one's wanting, the heart of one's deepest desire. The crypt in Canterbury Cathedral with its stone trees is the spiritual hart of the wud.---Ref: http://www.errorbar.net/rw/

@entreprecariat I think replies also subscribe you to edit-updates don't they? It could be cool if toots became de-ephemeralized by features like this.

@entreprecariat Similar feels when I look up some word on LEO and remember the (printed) German dictionary is within arm's reach.

@entreprecariat @despens There was a lot of troll-ish, edgy posting followed by a melodramatic unsubscribe from the Spectre mailing list.

@entreprecariat Just FYI: replies do NOT get updates. Only boots. Not sure what the user story was here. I wonder what "favorites" do and bookmarks?

The #foraging season is in full effect! Lots of good stuff around these days: wild garlic (Bärlauch), lungwort (Lungenkraut), deadnettle (Taubnessel), stinging nettles (Brennnessel), bulbous comfrey (Beinwell) and of course dandelions (Löwenzahn). I also found some lesser celandine but the advice is not to eat it once it's flowering so I decided to pass.

My local Cargo Bike Collective started a few months ago and we have finally gotten our shop and stuff together enough to finish a bike. We scrounged some old junked bikes from the neighborhood along with an old wheelbarrow basin for cargo. It still needs some tuning but it's lookin' good and rides surprisingly well.#bike #fahrrad

@entreprecariat The president of that university makes several million per year. Below them they have an army of Deans, VPs, Barons, demogorgons, etc. who are all paid salaries on the level of corporate executives. The student lounges have original leather Le Corbusier chairs. There's a pool, 24/7 gym, tennis courts (with lights), a football stadium and a private police force. If they have big-time sports, those programs cost tens of millions per year. The newest building on campus is probably just 1-5 years old and was designed by a Starchitect. They also spend millions on recruiting and allumni relations. All that stuff adds up and they have to save somewhere, preferably at the bottom… on the people who do the actual job of educating the students.

Does anyone remember a tiny, looped, dancing raver GIF from the late 1990s? It was popular in IM circles back then. Would love to find that one again. Even cooler if anyone knows the attribution.Feel free to boost!

An organic, fair-trade, community-governed, collectively-owned, open-source oil rig is still an oil rig.Intentions, governance, ownership, etc. are all super important, but you also need to be honest about what the thing does and the consequences. I'm lookin' at you "Open-Source Local LLMs".

Imagine that it's 1925 and I am a clever, experienced mechanical engineer. I look around at the "tech" world of the time and notice some disturbing things: - the rising power of literally fascist CEOs like Henry Ford - What began as an inefficient, quirky novelty toy for rich people, the automobile, has become "normal" and started to dominate public space - rising levels of fossil pollution - the rising monopoly power of Oil companies - dangerous levels of stock-market speculation - brutal exploitation of people and environmental destruction in mining and rubber producing (mostly colonial) regions - the use of debt to get less wealthy consumers to buy cars - scores of innocent pedestrians injured or killed by automobiles - urban planning that increasingly favors more expensive cars over other users of the streets - declining sense of importance of shared forms of transportation like trolleys and trainsAs an engineer, I look at all those rising issues and then I say:"What we need is an Open Source Model-T Ford with some slightly better safety features."In retrospect, that would seem like a pretty inadequate response.
