@TedUnderwood This meme gets used a lot, but this is perhaps the absolutely most spot-on, true-to-the-source-material version that I've ever seen. Nicely done, Ted.

@TedUnderwood I too thought we'd be well into double digits by now. This is not the future we were promised.

@mjg59 Do you remember if you continued to follow NNTP throughout the day? Was it really active?

This editorial by Josh Marshall gets at something that I've been feeling and unable to express deep in my gut.https://talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/why-january-6th-is-more-important-now-than-its-ever-been"No republic is safe if it contains a major political faction which allows itself to resort to subterfuge and violence if it can’t succeed in a free and fair election."

@futurebird I recently read the article on "NanoProcessor" from a 1985 issue of "Home Computing Magazine" and it sorta fits this.https://archive.org/details/HomeComputerMagazine_Vol5_05/page/n13/mode/2upIt's fascinating that this was an article in a popular magazine! (The BASIC listing is in the back.)

@futurebird @cyberlyra Googling "where are my packages" would, at one time, return links to USPS tracking based on Gmail results. I haven't tried it in a while but I seem to recall it got disabled. So the capability is there, maybe?

@futurebird That would be pretty rad (and hard). I love modifications like that.I attended a student presentation from a game studies class where one team had augmented Dots & Lines to include some very tricky changes to point allocations by which type of square you enclosed, etc etc, and it was *hard*.

@futurebird you know, if I am remembering correctly Gary Cole (on the right) played an evil, possibly-the-devil sheriff on American Gothic that repeatedly was able to weaponize the local government in order to bring about nefarious ends. Huh.

@futurebird I thought (and could be wrong) that the distinction was being made between pardoning (which I thought indicated that the crime or conviction was not valid, etc) and commutation, where excessive sentences could be dealt with. But maybe this is my misunderstanding.

@futurebird If they're what I'm thinking, I've used them on miniatures for detail work and they've been pretty alright.

@futurebird I remember enjoying reading "Red Son" about Superman landing in the USSR. May not have aged terribly well and I read it in the mid-aughts.

@futurebird I don't think this is necessarily too technical, but it might be. The era of reionization, when the universe became transparent ("optically thin") in visible light and once again visible to a human observer, is a really cool concept. It lends itself really well to demonstrations of the way stars and galaxies formed.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kifF3RYcfn0This is a viz of a simulation of reionization and it's really evocative. (We simulate universes as periodic cubes, thus the boxiness.)

@futurebird did you read Fire Upon the Deep? I confess to having read that, but not yet Deepness in the Sky. I rather enjoyed it but may just not have picked up on the lionization of trade etc.

@futurebird I got mine through a GOTV org but they were all for CA. I felt a little deflated till I saw they were going to a swing district the Dems barely lost in the House last time and now I am psyched up!

@futurebird @w7voa Hilariously, I read it first as falling back on the familiar grift of a multi-level marketing scheme. "Down-ballot" becomes "downline" etc.

@futurebird @w7voa Aahhh, of course! And traditional architectural pyramids have more than one layer of bricks before the tippy-top, right?
