@grammargirl @bodhipaksa If you use a non English language frequently on a Mac, you can add the keyboard for that language in the settings. What’s cool is that you can use a keyboard shortcut (ctrl-space) to switch between them. I frequently go back and forth between Spanish and English and use this shortcut all the time. While press and hold is convenient for little used languages, it’s a rather inconvenient for frequently used languages. Typing accents with Spanish is super easy. It’s done with composing characters where you type the accent of interest then type the accented character.

@grammargirl Out of an outstandingly morbid sense of curiosity, what are the rules and how are they being violated?

@grammargirl Interesting, I can see why you might want to use a bag to keep the bin from getting smelly but as you said #thesearetheactualrules. We're not allowed to put animal waste in our compost bins which makes sense for the hygiene. Not everyone in my city is either aware of this or cares. Sometimes we'll get drive by dumpings (haha) of doggy bags in our bins when they're still at the curb.

@grammargirl I *loved* the quote from the CEO. Google will penalize you?! How about you worry about the harm you cause your readers you #@*%.

@grammargirl How about what even is a sweater? Is a hoodie a sweater? It is interesting how people bin things

@grammargirl I'd fall in the 72.8% on that poll. For me a necessary condition for a sweater is that it be knitted or crocheted (stolen from M-W's definition). I think for many people though that's not true.

@jemal @grammargirl If the dictation has time stamps, I wonder if you could feed it separate audio tracks and use a program to merge the output. You would still have to clean it up. It would depend on how much work the cleanup is as to whether or not it’s a time savings.

@grammargirl @edibuddies I strongly believe in taking a descriptivist point of view in most contexts. This is one construction that still grates on me though. The only other one that grates more is "I feel badly". I want to scream "Is your feeler broken? Do you feel bad because your feeler is broken?" 🤣

@grammargirl I enjoyed the latest episode of Grammar Girl. In it, a caller mentioned the phrase “sufficiently suffonsified”. You may know this already but @wayword did a nice segment on this phrase. You can listen to it here https://www.waywordradio.org/suffonsified/

@grammargirl @wayword Thanks! I love your segment on familect. One of my own examples comes from my mother who would frequently say “home again, home again, jiggity jig” whenever we would come home from a long trip. For years, I never paid it much attention. One day I was listening to “A Way with Words” and a caller mentioned that phrase as a part of a larger nursery rhyme. It kinda blew my mind that it came from some thing other people said. Those sorts of familect segments are the most interesting to me where you find that a phrase that you believed to be unique to your family ties you to a broader community.I love the show and am looking forward to the next episode. 🙂

@grammargirl Here's my attempt:"Such sentences can be confusing because readers may not realize you've started a new sentence."I reworded the first part to remove "readers" so it could be used in the second clause. Thanks for letting me play along! I'm sensing a potential new NYTimes word game 🤣

@grammargirl Do you know the ×11 rule? Add the two numbers together and put the result in the middle of the number you’re multiplying. For example, 15×11= 1 (1+5) 5 = 165

@grammargirl Private equity companies by and large seem to ruin companies. From what I've read and heard, Barnes and Noble is an exception to that rule. Although, I get the feeling that is due in large part to the CEO that was installed. He seems to be a genuine book person and so is almost certainly an extreme outlier.
