Happy #PublicDomain day to my American friends! Like Thanksgiving, we celebrate later in Canada. Unlike Thanksgiving, we celebrate 20 years later, since #Trudeau brought in #copyright extensions that mean no new works will enter public domain until 2042.https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2022/04/the-canadian-government-makes-its-choice-implementation-of-copyright-term-extension-without-mitigating-against-the-harms/@pluralistic

If I understand correctly, Arthur Conan Doyle's #SherlockHolmes, which fully entered US #publicDomain today was.already in the Canadian PD. Prior to 2022 our copyright terms were less egregious than the American version

Nice round up of alternatives to news "link taxes" that might actually make things better, by @pluralistic https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/04/saving-news-big-tech

@pluralistic skipping to the end of the series, requiring platforms to support end-to-end communication (ie, net neutrality applied to the platform) is a very simple idea that would reduce the capacity of tech giants to distort relationships by extorting 'promoted content'.https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2023/06/save-news-we-need-end-end-webBasically, it would require twitter et al to send me the content I asked for (ie, from the people I follow), without requiring them to pay for special treatment.Which is the way the #fediverse works already

@strypey interesting read thanks!Only one disagreement from me: yyyy-mm-dd is the only date format that *isn't* confusing!

A third of Canadians think the unprecedented wildfires this year are the result of arsonists. An idea promoted by conservative politicians, but with no evidence to support it.https://www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/article-canadians-unified-on-forest-protection-although-wildfire-cause/#ClimateChange #denialism

@lps @futureisfoss how does that work? It looks like #CastoPod is for hosting podcasts, do you need a particular client to post comments?

@elduvelle @clive for a task manager/todo list, I've abandoned digital and gone to a paper notebook. syncing issues disappeared:)I found the #BulletJournal system very useful in providing a flexible, minimalist structure to my notebook. See #RyderCaroll's book or YouTube channel for details. be warned though, a lot of people have become quite taken with the name "bullet journal", and use it to describe very complicated scrapbooking hobbies that don't have a lot in common with Carroll's actual method

Half of my time in #bioinformatics is spent writing scripts. The other half is spent with my finger hovering over the enter key, certain that a stray semi-colon in said script is going to permanently erase all my data the moment I submit it.

@futurebird I think this also applies to monopolists like Amazon, Google and Apple effectively enclosing markets and imposing rents on their tenants. App stores, advertising, Amazon marketplace. All started as relatively open marketplaces. As they crowded out competing venues, they are able to extort increasing fees from vendors and customers, without providing any additional value themselves. There's a book on this, "Technofeudalism". I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list.

Emacs org-mode includes the function `org-latex-preview`, which provides image overlays for LaTeX formulas in the buffer. As it turns out, it mostly works in non-org-mode buffers. It does throw warnings. I have suppressed them with this little wrapper:```(defun tws-latex-preview (&optional ARG) (interactive "P") (let ((warning-minimum-level ':error)) (org-latex-preview ARG)))```Not rigorously tested, but seems to work for making pretty comments in my source code.#emacs #orgmode #latex #rstats

What's the point of federating with #Bluesky if I can't see posts there without having an account?
